CONWAY, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina's women's basketball team struggled from the floor, hitting just 29.1 percent from the floor in a 66-52 Big South Conference loss to visiting Winthrop, Feb. 23. With the loss, the Lady Chanticleers fell to 15-10 and 3-7 in league play while the Eagles moved to 18-9 and 6-3 in the conference.
Both teams struggled to find the basket in the first eight minutes of the game, combining for just 11 points, though the visiting Eagles took a 9-2 lead in that time. Coastal then went on a 7-2 run over a 2:30 segment, capped by a three-pointer Kate Jasinski to trim the lead to 11-9 with 10:15 to go in the first. However, that is as close as CCU would get the remainder of the half. WU rattled off the next five points, including a conventional three-point play from Shelly Hankins to go up 16-9 just three minutes later. From there, Coastal hung in the remainder of the first half, fighting off the 14-2 domination in the paint by the visitors, to trail by five, 25-20 at the halftime break.
Coastal cut the margin to three on two different occasions early in the second half, the last at 29-26 with 16:13 to play. However, the visitors took over at that point, going on a 20-8 run over the next eight-and-a-half minutes, going 8-of-13 during that time and eight points from Ashley Fann, to take a 49-32 lead with 8:06 to play. CCU got as close at 11 after a 6-0 run in the next three minutes and got within 10 in the final minute but Winthrop converted free throws down the stretch, hitting six of their last eight to seal the victory.
The Lady Chants hit just 16-of-55 shots from the floor and 5-of-19 (26.3 percent) from the three-point arc, while the Eagles were 49.1 percent in the field (26-of-53), including a stellar 15-of-24 in the final half. Winthrop dominated the boards 42-31 and outscored CCU 36-16 in the paint.
Coastal was led by Lacey Lyons with 14 points, but she was the only CCU player in double figures. Amanda Stull chipped in eight, while Devin Rivers had a team-high nine boards. Winthrop was led by Fann with 18 points, while Shanice Cole posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
CCU takes the next week off before hosting High Point next Saturday, Mar. 1 at 2 p.m., with Senior Day ceremonies prior to the game. Winthrop returns home for a match-up with league-leading Liberty on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.
