Turner, Yates Have Double-Doubles as Women's Basketball Defeats Radford 73-61

CONWAY, S.C. –Senior Kim Turner (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C.) and junior Calisha Yates (Columbus, Ind./Chattanooga State C.C.) each had a double-double and the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (14-7, 4-5 Big South) hit eight three-pointers in a 73-61 win over Radford University (10-12, 3-6 Big South) Feb. 13 in Conway, S.C.

Coastal jumped out to a 7-3 lead at 17:38 on a Yates layup, but the Highlanders tied the game at 11 at 15:02 after jumpers from Shavon Earp and Sarah Stephens. Coastal went on an 8-0 run the next 3:23, which was capped by a three from junor Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill). Radford shaved that lead to one with layups from Corrie Fertitta, Stephens and a three from Serena White. The lead would never be more than five points the rest of the half, but a 7-0 run in the last 1:42 gave the Lady Chants a 41-36 halftime lead. The capper was a three from Yates with four seconds remaining.

Three CCU players were in double figures in the first half. Turner had 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Yates and Dill had 10 points apeice. Yates had five rebounds and Dill dished four assists. For Radford, White hit four three-pointers for 12 points and Fertitta had 10 points and four rebounds.

A Fertitta three with 17:31 left made it 46-44 Coastal, but that would be as close as the Highlanders would get. A Yates three made at 15:00 made it 51-45 and the lead would grow to seven on a three from senior Jasmine Tyler (Jacksonville, Fla./Okaloosa C.C.). Radford cut the lead to 60-57 on a three-point play from Johnette Walker at 4:48, but Coastal went on a 9-0 run, powered by four points from Turner and a three from Dill. Turner’s jumper at 1:26 and two Dill free throws iced Coastal’s 14th win of the season.

Turner had season highs of 25 points and 13 rebounds and Yates went for 15 points and a career high 13 rebounds. Turner was 10-of-16 from the field, a season high for Coastal, and Yates was 3-of-5 from three-point range. Dill had 15 points and a career high nine assists. Dill also hit three three-pointers. Senior Demaria Young (Memphis, Tenn./Walters State C.C.) was Coastal’s fourth player in double figures, scoring 15 points and adding seven rebounds.

Coastal shot 44.3 percent from the field and was 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. The eight three pointers were two off a season high. Radford also had eight three-pointers, but shot only 25.8 percent from the field in the second half.

Radford had a double-double as well, as Fertitta had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Walker and White had 15 points apiece, while Stephens added eight rebounds.

Coastal is at UNC Asheville Saturday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m., in the Justice Center.

NOTES: Yates picks up her third double-double of the season. She had 13 points and 11 rebounds against Charleston Southern and went for 16 points and 11 rebounds versus Southern Virginia... This was Turner’s fourth double-double of her career and first of the season... Turner was one point off a career high. She had 26 points against Coker Jan. 5, 2005... Coastal outrebounded Radford 41-38 and won the turnover battle, committing just 10 turnovers to Radford’s 13... Of Turner’s 10 rebounds, five were offensive.
