Women's Basketball Defeats Charleston Southern 76-69 for Second Straight Road Win

The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (12-6, 2-4 Big South) had three players in double figures, led by senior Amber Rose’s (Bloomington Springs, Tenn./Upperman) 20 points, as the Lady Chanticleers won its second straight road game, 76-69, over Charleston Southern University (5-14, 0-7 Big South) Feb. 4 in North Charleston, S.C.   Charleston Southern took a five-point lead on a Pam Tolbert layup with 16:04 left in the first half, but Coastal went on a 6-0 run after two three pointers by Rose, taking a 12-11 lead at 14:27.  Coastal took a three-point lead on senior Kim Turner’s (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C.) jumper at 12:04, but Charleston Southern scored the next seven points, capped by a three from Danielle Baskin at 10:15.  Charleston Southern had as much as a five-point lead in the first half, but Coastal scored the next 11 points, taking a 30-24 lead at 5:58 on a layup from senior Jasmine Tyler (Jacksonville, Fla./Okaloosa C.C.).  Another Rose three gave CCU a 35-26 lead at 3:30 as the Chants went into the lockerroom with an 11-point lead (40-29) on a three from junior Calisha Yates (Columbus, Ind./Chattanooga State C.C.) with 49 seconds remaining.   Rose was 7-of-10 from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point range for 17 first-half points.   Yates had five points and six rebounds in the first frame, while Tyler added six points.  For CSU, Deborah Cherry had eight points and four rebounds.   Turner hit a layup at 17:05 to take a 44-32 lead, but Charleston Southern cut the lead to seven (45-38) at 15:53 on a three from Jewel Larson.  Coastal battled back, getting the lead to 12 on junior Alisha Dill’s (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) layup at 14:05.  Coastal then led 58-44 at 10:13 on a Tyler layup, but a 6-0 Lady Buc run was capped by a Tojalynn Atmore jumper at 8:41.  Dill scored CCU’s next five points, and a layup from senior Demaria Young (Memphis, Tenn./Walters State C.C.) at 6:05 put the Lady Chants up 65-51.  Charleston Southern stayed in the game, going on a 10-2 run that was capped at 3:32 on a banked three from Cherry.  On the next possession, junior Vanessa Laug (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) banked a three to put Coastal up 70-61.  An Atmore jumper and two Amber James free throws made it 70-65 with 59 seconds left, but that would be as close as the Lady Bucs would come.  Coastal hit 6-of-8 free throws in the last minute to come away with the victory.   Rose tied her career high with 20 points and added four assists.  Yates had her second double-double of the year, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Dill was Coastal’s third player in double figures with 14 points.    Coastal shot 48.3 percent from the field and were 8-of-20 from three-point range.  The Lady Chants forced 22 turnovers and had eight steals.   Charleston Southern was led by Cherry’s 18 points.  Erica McCoy added 11 points and nine rebounds.  Charleston Southern hit 47.2 percent of its shots.   Coastal will end its three-game road trip Tuesday, Nov. 7, at Winthrop.  Game time in Rock Hill, S.C., is at 7 p.m.   NOTES:  Yates had her other double-double against Southern Virginia Nov. 25, scoring 16 points and adding 11 rebounds… Rose had 20 points Jan. 12 against Morris, scoring 15 first-half points… Coastal snapped a three-game losing streak to Charleston Southern… Coastal now leads the all-time series 37-27… Young had seven points, five rebounds and four assists in the win.
