The Opening Tip
The Chants and the Runnin' Bulldogs
The Coastal Carolina/Gardner-Webb series started during the 2008-09 season when Gardner-Webb joined the Big South from the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Chanticleers claimed both victories during the 2008-09 campaign but have lost the last six meetings, including a 64-56 defeat in the semifinal round of the Big South Tournament in March of 2010.
A Look At the Runnin' Bulldogs
The young Gardner-Webb squad has struggled mightily this season after claiming the Big South Tournament championship a year ago. The Runnin' Bulldogs started the season 0-9 before winning at N.C. Central in their last non-conference game. The team's only conference victory came in a 73-63 upset over Coastal on Jan. 9 in Boiling Springs. The Runnin' Bulldogs benefited from 32 points in 51 trips to the charity stripe.
Gardner-Webb averages 48.5 points per game, but surrender 72.1 and hold a -6.0 season rebounding margin. Catrina Green leads the Runnin' Bulldogs with 10.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per outing.
Coastal will play five of its next seven games at home, where the Chants are 9-1 this season, starting with Saturday's game against Gardner-Webb.
Five Chants have dished out 20-plus assists this season, including Shatia Cole (42), Angelica Henry (37), Olivia Irick (36), Kira Carter (25) and AJ Jordan (21).
Freshman Shatia Cole (11.8 points per game) is on pace to be the first freshman to lead Coastal Carolina in scoring since Cheri McNeil did so during the 1998-99 season.
Olivia Irick has made her mark as a 3-point sharpshooter; however, she has company this season as Shatia Cole has tallied 24 triples compared to Irick's 23 with both launching 68 attempts.
Today marks the first time this season the Chanticleers will appear on TV.
Shatia Cole is averaging 18.6 points per outing over the past three games ... She has 11 games with 10+ points, 2 games with 20+ points and three games just shy of the 10 point plateau with nine points.
Sophomore guard Angelica Henry scored nine points and gathered a career-high nine rebounds to finish just shy of her first career double-double at Charleston Southern.
Lets Go With Two for 20, Alex
In Coastal's game at Charleston Southern (Jan. 28) guards Shatia Cole and Olivia Irick put on a show to the tune of 42 combined points. Cole finished with a career-high 22 points and Irick poured in a season-high 20 points to become the first two Chanticleers to score 20+ points in the same game since the vaunted scoring duo of Amanda Stull and Sydnei Moss tallied 23 and 22 points, respectively, at Campbell on Nov. 16, 2009.
Making Her Way Back
Sophomore forward Shanika Maddox has played four games, making three starts, since returning from an injury that knocked her out of the lineup for nearly five games. The Chants are 1-3, with two losses coming by a mere three points, since Maddox's return but her impact has been felt on both the offensive and defensive glass. With Maddox out of the lineup Coastal was outrebounded 171-123; but since her return the Chants have returned to controlling the glass outrebounding opponents 165-139, including a 50-30 advantage against Charleston Southern.
The Chanticleers' aggression on the defensive end of the floor has led to 203 steals this season. Coastal's 11.3 thefts per game ranks second in the Big South and 37th in the country. Additionally, Coastal's thefts have led to 369 points, 32.8 percent of the team's total offensive output.
Coastal Carolina continues its homestand on Monday, Feb. 6 as hosts to UNC Asheville. Tipoff from Kimbel Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. FREE Chick-fil-A sandwiches will be provided for the first 100 fans through the door, compliments of Chick-fil-A in Conway.
