Women's Basketball Defeats Savannah State 59-50

CONWAY, S.C. – Sophomore Amanda Stull (Rushville, Ind./Rushville Consolidated) and senior Vicky Blanchard (Eutawville, S.C./Holly Hill-Roberts) both had double-double’s and the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (13-6) overcame a five-point deficit late in the game to defeat Savannah State (11-12) 59-50 Feb. 2 in Kimbel Arena.   Coastal led by as many as 15 points in the first half and went into the lockerroom with a 30-21 lead. A Stull jumper at 14:36 made it 10-4 Coastal. Savannah State would cut the lead to 12-10 at 11:22 on a LaShara Smith jumper, but four straight points by the Lady Chanticleers made it 16-10 with 9:51 left. A jumper from Devin Rivers (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) pushed the lead to 23-15 at 3:20 and Coastal capped a 9-0 run with two Blanchard free throws at 1:04, giving CCU a 30-15 lead. Savannah State would score the last six points, including a three by Ivy Smith with three seconds left.   Sophomore Lacey Lyons (Beverly Hills, Fla./Crystal River) had 11 first-half points, with Stull adding seven points and five rebounds. For Savannah State, Ivy and LaShara Smith had six points apiece. Coastal shot 37 percent in the first half and were 8-of-15 at the free-throw line.   Stull’s jumper at 18:31 made it 32-23 Coastal, but the lead would be down to four (34-30) at 15:48 on a LaShara Smith jumper. A 6-0 run that started at 10:45 by Courtney Long’s two free throws was ended at 9:11 on an Antoinette Williams jumper, tying the game at 38. Lyons would give Coastal a 40-38 lead on two free throws, but Savannah State went on another 6-0 run as Ivy Smith’s layup at 6:05 made it 44-40 SSU. Ivy Smith’s layup at 5:20 made it 46-41 Tigers, but Coastal would get a three from Lyons and three free throws from freshman Sydnei Moss (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) to cut it to 48-47 at 3:42. Moss’ jumper at the three-minute mark gave Coastal a 49-48 lead. Blanchard then scored the next four points, including a dagger of a three at 1:33, giving Coatal a 53-48 lead. LaShara Smith’s layup made it a one-possession game, but Coastal went 6-of-6 from the free-throw line to earn the win.    Stull and Blanchard each had 12 points and 11 rebounds. It was a career high in rebounds for Stull. Lyons led Coastal with 16 points, while senior C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) had four assists for the second straight game.    For Savannah State, Ivy Smith had 17 points, with Patrice Robinson and Williams pulling down six rebounds apiece.   Coastal shot 31.3 percent from the field, but had a 41-32 rebounding advantage on the Tigers. Coastal was 25-38 from the free-throw line, setting a season high for free-throws made and attempted. Savannah State shot 36.7 percent from the field and had 10 steals on the game.   Coastal hosts Charleston Southern Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.
