Women's Basketball Completes Second-Half Comeback in 52-47 Win over Winthrop

The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (12-6, 1-3 Big South) came back from an 11-point deficit and senior Vicky Blanchard (Eutawville, S.C./Holly Hill-Roberts) scored all 15 of her points in the second half as the Lady Chanticleers defeated Winthrop (14-7, 2-1 Big South) 52-47 Jan. 30 in Rock Hill, S.C. Coastal picked up its first win in the Big South, snapping a three-game losing streak in the process.   Sophomore Lacey Lyons (Beverly Hills, Fla./Crystal River) hit two three-pointers in the first 3:22, giving the Lady Chanticleers an early 6-2 lead. Freshman Syndei Moss’ (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) hit a layup at 13:11 to give Coastal an 8-5 lead, but Winthrop would answer with an 11-0 run as Ashley Fann scored six points in that run. Ashley Haugtvedt’s layup at 9:29 gave Winthrop a 16-8 advantage. Coastal’s defense would toughen as CCU held Winthrop scoreless for the next 6:19. Senior C.J. Ware’s (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) jumper at 4:32 cut the WU lead to 16-12. Winthrop would again answer with a 7-3 run to end the half. Lyons’ third three of the half made it 23-15 heading into the lockerroom.   Lyons had nine points and three rebounds in the first half, while Blanchard had seven rebounds. Coastal shot just 22.2 percent in the first half and committed nine turnovers. Fann led Winthrop with 11 points, while Yvonne van Daalen added seven. Haugtvedt had seven rebounds for the Eagles, who shot 37 percent and had 10 points in the paint.   Coastal came out in the second half did not allow Winthrop to score for the first 9:07, gaining a 28-23 lead. Blanchard hit a three at 19:24 for her first points of the game. Jumpers by Stull and Blanchard cut the Winthrop lead to 23-22 at 16:49. Sophomore Devin Rivers (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) hit 1-of-2 free throws at 14:55, giving the Chants a 24-23 lead. Blanchard then scored the next four points for a five points Lady Chant lead. Van Daalen hit a three at 10:54 for the Eagles’ first points of the half. Coastal came back to take a five-point lead (33-28) on a Rivers’ jumper at 9:01. Moss’ three-point play gave CCU a 36-30 lead at 7:44, but a three from Shelly Hankins, a Jennifer Walker free throw and a three from Tiffany Rodd gave Winthrop a 37-36 lead with 6:14 left. Hankins’ second big three-pointer made it 41-37 Winthrop at 4:57, but two free throws from sophomore Amanda Stull (Rushville, Ind./Rushville Consolidated) and a three from Blanchard gave CCU a 42-41 lead. Blanchard’s runner at 1:46 gave Coastal a 44-41 lead. Fann came back with a layup, but Rivers was fouled on a jumper and hit two huge free throws with 1:10 left for a 46-43 lead. Coastal went 6-of-8 from the free-throw line in the last 48 seconds left to ice its first Big South win.   Lyons led Coastal with 17 points, while adding eight rebounds. Blanchard was one rebound away from a double-double, scoring 15 points and adding nine rebounds. Ware led Coastal with four assists.    For Winthrop, Fann had 19 points and seven rebounds, while van Daalen had 10 points and six assists. Coastal shot 33.3 percent and went 14-of-20 from the free-throw line.  Winthrop shot 36.2 percent from the floor.   Coastal returns to Kimbel Arena Saturday, Feb. 2, as the Lady Chants host Savannah State in a non-conference affair. The game is part of the “Think Pink” campaign to support breast cancer awareness.
