The Opening Tip
The Chants and the Buccaneers
Saturday's game marks the 78th all-time meeting between the Big South's southernmost members. Coastal leads the series 45-32 and has won nine of the last 13 meetings. Under LeForce, the Chants are 20-12 against their Lowcountry rival.
A Look At Buccaneers
Charleston Southern enters the game as one of the most prolific scoring teams in the country. The Bucs currently rank No. 3 in the nation with 9.3 triples per game and are No. 28 in the NCAA averaging 73.1 points per game. Charleston Southern has put up 500 3-point attempts this season making 173 for a Big South leading 34.6 percentage.
The Bucanneers are led by Rachelle Cowards 17.0 points per game on her 43.0 percent from the floor and 37.3 percent from deep. Lakeitha Alston and Helen Terry are also averaging double-digits in the scoring column with 15.9 and 11.2 points per game, respectively.
• After storming to a 7-2 record through the non-conference portion of its schedule, Coastal is 3-5 in Big South play and has lost five of its last six games.
• Coastal is 8-1 this season when holding opponents under a 40.0 percent shooting percentage from the floor.
• Freshman Shatia Cole (11.2 points per game) is on pace to be the first freshman to lead Coastal Carolina in scoring since Cheri McNeil did so during the 1998-99 season.
• Olivia Irick's 22 3-pointers this season have moved her into sole possession of 10th all-time in the Coastal Carolina record book with 95 career triples.
• Charleston Southern enters the game averaging 72.3 points per game; however, Coastal has only allowed three opponents to eclipse the 70-point plateau this season.
Cole Earns Third Big South Honor
Shatia Cole has been tabbed The Crons Brand Big South Freshman of the Week for games played Jan. 17-23, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
This is the third time this season Cole has earned the honor. The Myrtle Beach native joins Brooke Weisbrod (four Big South Freshman of the Week plaudits during the 1997-98 season) as the only two student-athletes in Chanticleer women's basketball history to garner three Big South Freshmen of the Week honors.
Cole, a point guard, averaged 17 points per game and shot 54 percent from the field in Coastal Carolina's two games last week. She connected on 60 percent of her shots from the floor to finish with a career-high 20 points against High Point and followed that performance with 14 points against Campbell on Jan. 23. In the two game span, Cole also chipped in six rebounds, eight assists and three steals.
