Women's Basketball Drop Contest To High Point, 67-59

    

HIGH POINT, N.C.-The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (8-9, 2-3 Big South) lost its second straight game 67-59 to High Point University (9-9, 3-2 Big South) Jan. 26 in High Point, N.C.

High Point did not give up a lead in the first half as the Panthers scored the first four points and took a 14-7 lead with 14:44 left. When Katie Ralls made a fastbreak layup with 12:20 left in the first half, High Point had an 18-10 lead. Coastal cut the lead with three, 18-15, with 9:37 left, helped by two steals and layups from freshman Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill). High Point got the lead to seven, but Coastal made a 5-0 run that was capped by a three-pointer from senior Whitney Shearer (Monticello, Ky./Wayne County). High Point would then go on a 10-2 run over the next 2:58, as Chan Ingram hit a three to give the Panthers a 33-23 lead. Coastal cut the lead to seven at the half, as senior Cyndie Troutman (Hampton, Tenn./Walters State C.C.) hit a jumper as time expired.

Senior Nikki Reddick (Hartsville, S.C./Hartsville) had eight first-half points, while Troutman added six. Senior Crystal Brown (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) had five rebounds for the Lady Chants, who forced the Panthers into 13 first-half turnovers.

Coastal came out on fire in the second half. Crystal Brown made two jumpers in the first minute and a half to cut the lead to three, and four points from senior Temecca Barnes (Malone, Fla./Chipola J.C.) were sandwiched from a Katie O’Dell jumper, cutting the lead to one. Coastal took its only lead of the game with 15:51 left on a fastbreak layup from Troutman. High Point then went on a 6-0 run to make it 44-39 with 11:37 left. At 8:36, Troutman cut the lead to one with a three-point play, but a three from Emily Mills and a layup from Kate Jenner brought it back to six at 51-45. Coastal would cut the lead to two again at 2:30 on a jumper from junior Courtney Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) and at 1:51 on a Reddick layup. High Point would then outscore Coastal 8-2 at the end of the game as the Lady Chants made four free throws and two jumpers.

Reddick led Coastal with 17 points on 5-of-12 shooting and 6-of-9 from the free-throw line. Troutman added 12 points and Crystal Brown had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Troutman had a game-high six steals, while Barnes had five.

Coastal forced High Point into 30 turnovers, a season high, and 18 steals, but the Lady Chants shot 37.3 percent from the field and were outrebounded 47-27.

High Point was led by O’Dell, who had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Charlena Martin added 16.

Coastal heads to Birmingham, Ala., to face Birmingham-Southern College Saturday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m.
