The Coastal Carolina University womens basketball team (5-10, 1-3 Big South) was outscored by High Point Universtiy (7-9, 2-1 Big South) 42-27 in the second half as the visiting Panthers defeated the Lady Chanticleers 65-47 Jan. 24, in Conway, S.C.
Coastal scored the first four points of the game on jumpers from junior Kim Turner (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C.), but Raven Truslow answered with two jumpers of her own to tie the game at four at 16:15. High Point was up 9-6 at 14:11 on a three from Candyce Sellars. The Panthers extended the lead to four at 10:19 on a three from Shorty Martin. There were five ties in the first half, as a Turner jumper at 6:44 tied the game at 16. High Point then went on a 6-0 mini-run, capped by a layup by Katie ODell. Coastal cut it to two at 1:57 on a layup from senior Courtney Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) and an ODell free throw made it 23-20 at half.
Turner led Coastal with seven first-half points. Coastal shot 23.1 percent from the field and was 0-for-6 from three-point range. High Point was led by Martins seven points, while Truslow added six. High Point outrebounded Coastal 26-19 in the first half.
High Point outscored the Chanticleers 10-2 in the first three minutes, as a Truslow layup made it 33-22 at 16:56. The Panthers extended the lead to 13 on a jumper from Chan Ingram. Coastal got it as close as eight points at 12:03 on free throws from Brown, but High Point then went on a 9-0 run that made it 51-34 at 7:44. The lead was as high as 19 points in the second half as Coastal fell to 1-3 in the Big South.
Coastal was led by junior Demaria Young (Memphis, Tenn./Walters State C.C.), who had 10 points and seven rebounds. Turner added nine points and four blocked shots, while sophomore Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) had nine points and five rebounds.
Truslow had a game-high 16 points, while ODell added 15 points. Emily Mills had nine rebounds, while ODell and Katie Ralls added six.
Coastal shot 27.1 percent from the field for the game and was only 3-of-17 from three-point range. High Point had 36 points in the paint and 18 fast-break points. The Panthers also outrebounded Coastal 48-39.
