More Information:

The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (5-9, 1-2 Big South) picked up its first win in Big South Conference play with a 52-46 defeat of Winthrop University (2-14, 0-3 Big South) Jan. 22 in Rock Hill, S.C. Coastal also won its first road game behind 19 points from junior Kim Turner (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C.).

Coastal started the game on a 13-5 run that was charged by Turner. She had four jumpers in the 4:33 span. Winthrop then went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 13 at the 12:54 mark. That run was capped by a three form Iva Melivoj. At 7:33, Winthrop was down 21-17 after a jumper from Roneisha Kinney. Coastal then outscored the Eagles 9-1 the rest of the half, sparked by two Turner jumpers, a three from junior Demaria Young (Memphis, Tenn./Walters State C.C.) and a steal and layup from junior Jasmine Tyler (Jacksonville, Fla./Okaloosa C.C.).

Turner went 7-of-8 from the floor in the first 20 minutes for 14 points. Tyler and Young added five apiece. Junior Amber Rose (Bloomington Springs, Tenn./Upperman) had four rebounds for the Lady Chants. Winthrop was led by Jessica Dukes’ four points.

Coastal had its lead to as many as 13 points (33-20) on a three-pointer from sophomore Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) at 18:17. Winthrop cut the lead to 37-28 at 12:52 on a layup from Jolanda Crump, but Coastal answered with another Young three. Winthrop was as close as six points with 7:27 remaining on a Dukes layup, but a layup by senior Courtney Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) at 6:41 and back-to-back jumpers from Dill and Turner made it 49-38 at 4:43. Two free throws by Laug and one from Dill iced the game and broke a two-game losing streak.

Turner finished with 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting. She scored in double figures for the ninth game of the season. Young and Dill both had 10 points, while Brown and Young had six rebounds. Dukes led Winthrop with 14 points and eight rebounds.

Coastal shot 38.2 percent from the field and was 4-of-13 from three-point range. The Lady Chants also forced Winthrop into 27 turnovers.

Coastal looks for two in a row Monday, Jan. 24, against High Point University. Game time is at 7 p.m., in Kimbel Arena.
