Women's Basketball Wins at UNC Asheville 73-61 for First Big South Victory

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (10-6, 1-2 Big South) scored 43 points and shot 56.5 percent in the second half to defeat UNC Asheville (11-7, 2-1 Big South) 73-61 Jan. 20 in Asheville, N.C. Coastal had three players score in double figures, led by senior Alisha Dill’s (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) 20 points.

Dill would only play seven minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, but the Lady Chanticleers would get a team effort to take a 30-25 halftime lead. UNC Asheville took a 9-4 lead at the 15:33 mark on a three from Ashton Barton, After a Stacey Shepard layup at 9:27 gave UNCA a 15-11 lead, Coastal went on a 9-0 run, capped by two free throws from junior Victoria Blanchard (Eutawville, S.C./Walters State C.C.) at 4:08. Two Barton free throws cut the lead to 22-19, freshman Lacey Lyons (Beverly Hills, Fla./Crystal River) made five straight points, giving the Lady Chants an eight-point lead (29-22) with 59 seconds left. Senior Calisha Yates (Columbus, Ind./Chattanooga State C.C.) hit a free throw with four seconds left for the five-point halftime lead.

Blanchard led CCU with nine points in the first half, going 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. She also had six rebounds. Barton led all players with 10 first-half points. Coastal shot 37.9 percent from the floor and outrebounded UNCA 19-14 in the first half.

Dill had a steal and a layup at 16:43, giving Coastal a 34-25 lead. At 14:46, Elder cut the Coastal lead to 37-32, but Yates came back and hit a three, bringing the lead back to eight. The advantage moved to double digits at 11:03 on a jumper from Dill. Asheville would get as close as six points on a Katie Baldwin three at 6:26, but an 11-point run capped by a Blanchard three at 3:46 gave the Lady Chants a 62-49 lead. Coastal would score its last 11 points at the free-throw line to ice its first Big South win and second road win of the season.

Dill had 17 of her 20 points in the second half. She was 7-of-13 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. Blanchard had Coastal’s second straight double-double, scoring 15 points and adding 10 rebounds. She was 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Yates tied her season high with 14 points and was one rebound away from a double-double with nine rebounds.

Barton had 19 points to lead the Bulldogs, while Elder added 13. Ana Baker had five assists and six steals, while Elder had seven caroms.

Coastal shot 46.2 percent from the field and was 13-of-23 from the field in the second half. The Lady Chants outrebounded UNCA 37-30 and forced the Bulldogs into 22 turnovers.

Coastal is back in Kimbel Arena Monday, Jan. 22 against Birmingham-Southern. Game time is at 5 p.m., and is part of a doubleheader with the men’s team.
