Women's Basketball Falls to Radford 71-54 in Big South Opener

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (11-4, 0-1 Big South) committed 29 turnovers while Radford (14-6, 1-0 Big South) made 25-of-30 free throws as the Highlanders defeated the Lady Chanticleers 71-54 Jan. 19 in Conway, S.C. Coastal had its four-game winning streak snapped in the Big South opener.
Coastal led for the most of the first 10 minutes, as the Lady Chants had a four-point advantage on three separate occasions. The last was at 16:35 on a jumper from senior Vicky Blanchard (Eutawville, S.C./Holly Hill-Roberts) to make it 8-4 CCU. Coastal held its last lead of the game at 10:48 as Radford outscored CCU 19-5 the rest of the half. RU’s Taleia Moton had the final four points of the half, including a layup as the buzzer sounded, giving the Highlanders a 13-point lead at the break.
Sophomores Lacey Lyons (Beverly Hills, Fla./Crystal River), Amanda Stull (Rushville, Ind./Rushville Consolidated) and Blanchard had four points apiece in the first 20 minutes, while Stull had four rebounds. Moton had 11 first-half points and Kelli Darden had seven points and two blocked shots.
Coastal would cut the Radford lead to 42-31 on a Blanchard three at 12:14, but Radford answered with a 13-2 run over the next 4:30, capped by two Moton free throws at 7:45. Radford led by as many as 23 and came away with the 17-point victory.
Freshman Sydnei Moss (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) had 13 points, including 11 in the second half, to lead CCU. Blanchard added 11 points. Stull had six rebounds, while senior C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) had three assists.
Radford had four players score in double figures, led by Johnette Walker’s 16 points. Darden, Moton and Vandy Pullen had 13 points apiece. Corrie Fertitta had eight rebounds, while Walker had a game-high five assists.
Coastal was 41.5 percent from the field (22-53) and were 3-of-9 from three-point range. Radford held a 37-34 rebounding advantage and was 39.3 percent from the floor.
Coastal hosts Liberty Monday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m., while Radford is at Charleston Southern the same night at 7 p.m.
