Today’s contest will be a defensive battle as Coastal Carolina and Winthrop own two of the top three defenses in the Big South. The Lady Eagles dropped their last two games and are also looking for their second win in conference play. Scouting Winthrop (6-8, 1-2 Big South) Winthrop grabbed their first league win holding Presbyterian to 14 first half points for a 45-36 victory over the Blue Hose (Jan. 3). The Lady Eagles dropped the next two league games falling at home to Liberty 55-51 and then Radford, 54-50. In both losses, Winthrop was edged out by four points in the final five minutes of play. The Lady Eagles have the Big South’s best defense, holding opponents to 54.4 points per game, but have not been able to compliment that with a consistent offense, averaging only 51.2 points a contest. Ashley Fann poses a threat in the paint averaging 11.2 points and 8.7 rebounds a game, while Tiffany Rodd and Ashley Haugtvedt add 8.2 and 7.4 points per game, respectively. Series vs. Winthrop Series Record: Coastal Carolina leads 35-33 Coastal Carolina holds a slim advantage in this series having won three of the past four meetings and leads the all-time series by just two games. The teams each picked up a win and split the two-game series last season. Over the years, the squads have been evenly matched and this year is no different with the Lady Eagles sporting the top defense in the league and Coastal Carolina a close second in scoring defense. CHANTICLEER NOTEBOOK And Then There Were Three... The Chants had five players in double figures in their conference opener, four in the second league game and three in their last outing at Charleston Southern (Jan. 10). Junior Kendra Reynolds registered a personal-best 18 points, while sophomores Sydnei Moss and Kate Jasinski each tallied 11 points at CSU. Moss Boosting Offence From Bench Sophomore Sydnei Moss has provided a much-needed lift in the past three games off the bench for the Chants, averaging 14 points and six boards per contest. Moss led the team in scoring with 18 points and added nine rebounds in the Big South opening win over UNC Asheville (Jan. 3). The North Augusta native then scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds against High Point (Jan. 5), followed by 11 points and six rebounds at Charleston Southern (Jan. 10). Reynolds Doubling Up and Fitting In Junior Kendra Reynolds has recorded three double-doubles in seven games. Reynolds seems to be adjusting to Big South play quickly as the 6-0 forward is averaging 15.3 points and nine rebounds in league play. Reynolds is also getting it done at the free throw line shooting 86.4 percent (19-of-22) in seven games, and 83.3 percent (10-of-12) in the Big South. Defense Getting it Done In Coastal Carolina’s nine wins this season, the Chants have limited their opponents to 46.8 points per game. The Chanticleers’ strong defense has forced teams to shoot 31.4 percent from the field. When Coastal Carolina is on the losing end, it has surrendered 70.3 points per game to its competition. On the glass, Coastal Carolina holds a 382-339 advantage over opponents when it is victorious, but slips behind 303-220 on boards in its seven losses. They have also generated 189 opponent turnovers, posted 32 blocks and average 10.2 steals per game in nine victories this season. Getting to the Line The Chants are shooting 67.2 percent from the free throw line to sit in second place in the Big South. However, the significant number here is Coastal Carolina has gone to the line 341 times, the most in the conference. The Chanticleers were sent to the foul line 34 times (24-of-34) at Alabama State (Dec. 29) and went 25-for-29 at Wofford (Nov. 19). The second most attempts in the league belongs to High Point, who is shooting 61.0 percent on 310 attempts (189-of-310). Winthrop leads the BSC at 68.2 percent (137-of-201). First Impressions Count! Coastal Carolina is 8-2 when leading at the half. The Chanticleers are averaging 29.8 points in the first half and limiting opponents to 18.4 points in the opening frame. The Chanticleers have edged out opponents by one point in the first half twice, but gave up the lead on both occasions (at College of Charleston 32-31, vs. High Point 37-36). On the season, Coastal Carolina is averaging 27.3 points in the first 20 minutes, while shooting 35.8 percent from the floor. 30 Minutes and Counting... In the first three Big South games, Coastal Carolina has four players averaging more than 30 minutes. Junior Kendra Reynolds averages 36 minutes and classmates Devin Rivers and Amanda Stull are playing 30 and 33.3 minutes, respectively. Sophomore Kate Jasinski has earned 33 minutes a game. It’s Just Three Points The triple factor has plagued the Chants all season and has proved to be the difference in the past two contests as they have dropped their past two games by a combined three points. Those little three pointers have been hounding the Chanticleers all season. Coastal Carolina is 7-for-29 (24.1 percent), while its opponents are 12-for-23 (52.2 percent) from behind the arc in the last two outings. On the year, the Chants are shooting 26 percent (45-of-173) from triple territory, which puts them in last place in the league. A Defensive Battle Do not expect a high scoring game today between these two teams. Winthrop posts the best scoring defense in the league limiting teams to 54.4 points per game, while Coastal Carolina is third, holding opponents to 57.1 points a game. The Last Five The past two games for both Coastal Carolina and Winthrop have been decided in the last five minutes of play. Coastal Carolina: vs. High Point - The Chants held a 61-57 advantage with 4:37 remaining in the game, but the Panthers rallied for a 10-5 run, taking the game 67-66. vs. Charleston Southern - Coastal Carolina faced a four-point deficit at 59-55 (4:41), but battled back to tie the game 63-63 with 21 seconds left. A CSU jumper with three seconds left on the clock sent the Chants into the loss column at 65-63. Winthrop: vs. Liberty: Winthrop led 47-41 (4:53), but a 14-4 run by the Lady Flames in the closing minutes gave Liberty the 55-51 win. vs. Radford: Winthrop led 42-41 (4:34) but got outscored by Radford 13-8 for a 51-52 win. Road Testing the Chants Coastal Carolina is 2-5 on the road this season. The Chants hope to get out of a rut having lost three of the past four contests away from Kimbel Arena. The Chanticleers have allowed their opponents to score an average of 68.4 points and grab 46.3 rebounds in the five losses. The scoring margin road is -13.1, while the rebounding margin sits at -14.3 in seven road games. Stull Accepting Charity, Reynolds Wants In Junior Amanda Stull has gone to the free throw line 92 times in 16 games. Stull earned her way to line 18 times at Alabama State (Dec. 29), where she converted 13 freebies. On the season, she leads the Big South shooting 80.4 percent from the charity stripe. The Rushville native has gone 74-for-92, which includes two 8-for-8 performances against Wofford (Nov. 19) and Southern Virginia (Nov. 30), and a 7-for-7 outing against UNC Asheville (Jan. 3). Junior Kendra Reynolds is getting used to being at the line too after sitting out the first 10 contests due to NCAA transfer rules. During the past seven games, Reynolds has gone 19-for-22 at the foul line to shoot 86.4 percent this season. Rookie Roundup Even as a junior, Kendra Reynolds is still a rookie for the Chanticleers, but Reynolds is playing as a veteran. Reynolds has picked up three double-doubles in seven games and set a personal best of 18 points at Charleston Southern (Jan. 10). Freshmen Olivia Irick and Taylor Epley have earned playing time. Irick is averaging 4.1 points a game and has knocked down 10 three-pointers, while Epley is adding 1.1 points and 1.7 rebounds per contest. S-E-N-I-O-R-S? Coastal Carolina’s 2008-09 roster lists no seniors. This is the first time in Head Coach Alan LeForce’s 12 years he will be missing that senior leadership. However, the 2008-09 squad is rich in talent and experience. LeForce believes this is one of the most talented groups he and his staff have ever assembled at Coastal Carolina. Series Record: Radford leads 35-12 Radford at a Glance: After starting the season 1-11 under first year Head Coach Tajama Ngongba, the Highlanders seemed to have turned the corner as they have opened Big South play with a 2-1 record. Radford’s victories over Gardner-Webb and Winthrop were fueled by Kymesha Alston, who averaged 18 points per game. COASTAL CAROLINA SEASON SHORT CUTS Chanticleers Come up Short at Charleston Southern The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team lost a close 65-63 battle in the waning seconds at Charleston Southern Saturday, Jan. 10. The Chanticleers had trouble containing Big South leading scorer Pam Tolbert, who scored 22 of her game-high 25 points in the second half, including the game-winning jumper with three seconds left on the clock. Coastal Carolina had three players in double figures led by junior Kendra Reynolds, who netted 18 points, while sophomores Kate Jasinski and Sydnei Moss registered 11 points each. Coastal Carolina Tripped Up by High Point The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team could not overcome a 20-0 run by High Point midway through the game, as the Panthers defeated the Chanticleers 67-66 Monday, Jan. 5 at Kimbel Arena. The Chanticleers had their best shooting performance of the season shooting 47.1 percent from the floor, but High Point topped it making 50 percent of its shots. The loss dropped Coastal Carolina to 9-6 overall and 1-1 in the Big South, while High Point moved to 5-9 on the year and 2-0 in the conference. Chants Get First Big South Victory Over UNC Asheville, 68-55 The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team had five players in double figures for the first time this season storming out to a 68-55 victory over UNC Asheville in the Big South Conference season opener. Sophomores Sydnei Moss and Kate Jasinski combined with juniors Amanda Stull, Kendra Reynolds and Devin Rivers for the five players to reach double digits. Moss paced the Chants with 18 points, nearly registering a double-double tallying nine rebounds, while Jasinski scored 15 points for the Chants. Stull earned her third double-double of the year with 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, while Reynolds picked up her second career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Rivers scored 10 points in the game. Coastal Carolina dominated the boards from the start and finished the contest with a 49-37 advantage on the glass. The Chanticleers also held a slight edge shooting 38.5 percent from the floor, while the Bulldogs finished the game shooting 31.7 percent. The Chants went 26-for-32 (81.3 percent) from the charity stripe and the Bulldogs were 10-of-19 (52.6 percent) at the foul line. Coastal Carolina moved to 15-9 in Big South Conference openers dating back to the 1986-87 season. A Long December The Chanticleers played all six of their games in six different venues. Coastal Carolina set out on an 11-day, three-game road swing at the beginning of December, where they travelled three states, Indiana (Butler - Dec. 6), North Carolina (UNC - Dec. 13) and back to South Carolina (SCSU - Dec. 16). The Chants finally returned to Kimbel Arena where they hosted UNC Wilmington (Dec. 18). The Chants then headed down Hwy. 501 and hosted Stetson (Dec. 20) as part of the Crescent Bank Carolina’s Challenge at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. The final stop for Coastal Carolina was a trip to Montgomery, Ala., where they faced Alabama State (Dec. 29). During this span, the Chanticleers went 2-4. Alabama State Clips Chants 59-51 Coastal Carolina went to the free throw line 34 times and converted 24 of their foul shots, but it was not enough as Alabama State’s hot shooting downed the Chants 59-51, Dec. 29. The Hornets shot 46.7 percent from the field, while Coastal Carolina made 33.3 percent of its shots from the floor. Junior Amanda Stull was 13-for-18 at the charity stripe scoring 15 points as the top scorer for the Chanticleers. Atlantic Sun and Done! Coastal Carolina swept through its Atlantic Sun opponents this season earning wins over Campbell (Nov. 17), Jacksonville (Nov. 22) and Stetson (Dec. 20). The Chants are the only team in the Big South to earn victories over the A-Sun, as the rest of the Big South has gone 0-7 against the A-Sun. Noll Lights Up From Downtown to Push Chants Over Stetson Sophomore Jessica Noll scored a career-high 20 points, including four triples, to lead the Chanticleers past Stetson 51-49 Saturday, Dec. 20 at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Noll went 7-for-14 from the field, going 4-for-7 from three-point land, 2-for-2 at the free throw line and added five rebounds. Sophomore Sydnei Moss followed with seven points and 13 rebounds, which tied her career best. Chants Late Game Push Not Enough, UNCW Wins 56-51 The Chants attempted a late second-half push, but it came up short as UNC Wilmington edged out the Chanticleers 56-51 (Dec. 18) at Kimbel Arena. The Seahawks handed Coastal Carolina its first home loss of the season. Sophomore Sydnei Moss paced the Chants with 14 points and 12 rebounds, picking up her second double-double of the year. Reynolds Steals the Show in Debut Junior transfer Kendra Reynolds saw action for the first time this season at South Carolina State (Dec. 16), after sitting out the first nine games due to NCAA transfer regulations. Reynolds put the Chants on the board with her first drive to the basket and went on to record her first career double-double leading the Chants to a 53-43 victory over the Bulldogs. The South Bend, Ind., native knocked home a game-high 13 points and owned the glass with 11 rebounds, including 10 defensive boards for the Chanticleers. Reynolds also picked up a game-high three assists. Free Throw Shooting Clinches 53-43 Victory at SCSU Junior Amanda Stull scored the final seven points at the free-throw line to help Coastal Carolina seal a 53-43 victory over South Carolina State Tuesday, Dec. 16 at the S-H-M Memorial Center. Coastal Carolina went 9-for-10 at the line in the final three minutes of play. The Bulldogs attempted a late charge with an 8-0 run, cutting the Chants lead to 44-41 with 2:45 remaining in the game. The final nine points for the Chanticleers came at the line, with sophomore Sydnei Moss getting it started with two points at the charity stripe to give the Chants a 46-41 advantage. SCSU cut it back to three points at 46-43, but failed to convert their chances, forcing them to foul the Chanticleers. Stull, a 78.6-percent free throw shooter, was sent to the line on the next four Chant possessions. Stull missed her first shot, but then went 7-for-7 in the closing two minutes of the game. Starters Go Cold, Bench Heats Up Coastal Carolina’s starting five, juniors Amanda Stull and Devin Rivers and sophomores Sydnei Moss, Kate Jasinski and Katie White combined for 20 points in the 95-44 loss to No. 2 North Carolina (Dec. 13). The five players were 7-for-40 from the field and finished shooting 17.5 percent. Rivers and Moss owned five of the seven buckets, while Stull and White added one each, leaving Jasinski to pick up her two points at the charity stripe. The Chanticleer reserves shot 34.6 percent from the floor, sinking nine baskets for 24 points. It was the first time this season the Chants bench tallied more points than the starting lineup. Poor Shooting Helps Heels to 95-44 Win Over Chants Coastal Carolina leading scorer, junior Amanda Stull, was held to two points as second-ranked North Carolina ran past the Chants 95-44. Junior Devin Rivers led the Chants with eight points, while four players scored in double digits for the Tar Heels, with Italee Lucas knocking down a game-high 17 points. Coastal Carolina had its poorest shooting performance of the season going 16-for-66 from the floor, shooting 24.2 percent, while North Carolina shot 44.6 percent on 33-of-74 from the field. Stull Feels Right at Home in Indiana, Scores Career High Junior Amanda Stull had one of the most dominating performances by a Chanticleer this season at Butler (Dec. 6). Stull nabbed 17 of her career-high 20 points in the second half and pulled down 11 rebounds, tying a personal best mark. The Rushville, Ind., native added five steals and four assists, but Coastal Carolina came out on the losing end of a 78-48 decision. Butler Rules the Boards, Defeats Chants 78-48 The Chanticleers were handed their second loss of the season at Butler (Dec. 6), where the Chanticleers were outrebounded 55-30 and managed only nine offensive boards in the entire game, while the Bulldogs grabbed 22 in the contest. Butler capitalized on Coastal Carolina’s slow start to take 37-18 lead at the half. A layup by junior Amanda Stull with 7:55 remaining brought the Chanticleers within 16 points at 58-42, but that was the closest Coastal Carolina would get as Butler finished off the game with a 20-6 run for the 78-48 victory. Chants Get Votes in Associated Press Top 25 Poll After a 6-1 start to the 2008-09 season, the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team received four votes in the Associated Press Top 25 national rankings released Monday, Dec. 1. Coastal Carolina made its first ever appearance in the AP poll in program history Monday, Nov. 24, 2008. 24 Hours is All it Takes for Noll Sophomore Jessica Noll had two of her best outings in a Chanticleer uniform over the weekend, recording personal bests in points, rebounds, assists and blocks. Against Southern Virginia (Nov. 29), Noll found a rhythm in the second half going 6-for-7 from the floor tallying a career-high 15 points, helping the Chanticleer reserves outscore the Lady Knights’ bench 33-5. Less than 24 hours later, Noll was a spark of the bench and led the Chants with her first career double-double, draining 12 points and pulling down 13 rebounds, lifting Coastal Carolina over Coker (Nov. 30). Noll also nabbed a career-high three blocks against Coker and matched a personal best one assist in the game. Coastal Carolina Zips Past Coker Sophomore Jessica Noll recorded her first career double-double to lead the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team past Coker 64-31 Sunday, Nov. 30. Noll tallied game-highs of 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Chants, while redshirt freshman Courtney Grambley used the second half to score a season-high 10 points. The Chants only shot 29 percent in the first frame, but that was enough to go ahead of the Lady Cobras 27-12 at the break, who were shooting 16 percent from the floor. Coastal Carolina finished the day shooting 36.9 percent as Coker shot 23.1 percent from the field. Chanticleers Set Record, Dominate Southern Virginia Coastal Carolina set a school record for fewest points in a half by an opponent and sailed past Southern Virginia 76-36 Saturday, Nov. 29. The Chanticleers held the Lady Knights to just three points in the first 20 minutes of play, grabbing a 37-3 advantage at the half. Every player dressed for the Chanticleers made a contribution on the scoreboard, as all 10 players earned a bucket in the victory. Sophomore Jessica Noll used the final 10 minutes in the game to register a then career-high 15 points, going 6-for-10 on the day. Jasinski Firing on All Cylinders Sophomore Kate Jasinski had a career night at College of Charleston (Nov. 25), where she led the Chanticleers with a personal-best 23 points. She also tallied a career-high five rebounds in the game. Jasinski started the game going 4-for-4 from the field, scoring 10 of the Chants’ first 13 points. She finished the game 10-of-18 from the floor, including three triples. Jasinski also nabbed four steals. College of Charleston Hands Chants First Loss of Season Sophomore Kate Jasinski poured in a career-high 23 points, but the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team dropped a 72-58 decision to College of Charleston at Carolina First Arena Tuesday, Nov. 25. The Chanticleers held a 32-31 advantage at the half but came out flat in the second frame to shoot 29 percent from the field, while College of Charleston shot 48 percent from the floor to outscore the Chants 41 to 26 in the second half. Jasinski was 10-of-18 from the field and picked up four steals and a career-high five rebounds. Junior Amanda Stull was the only other Chant to score in double digits with 11 points and added three assists. Sophomore Sydnei Moss narrowly missed her second double-double of the season, grabbing 10 rebounds and scoring nine points. Stull Earns Big South Player of the Week Honor Junior Amanda Stull was named Big South Player of the Week, the league announced Monday, Nov. 24. It is Stull’s first-ever Player of the Week honor, after being named Freshman of the Week twice during her rookie campaign. Stull posted a solid week for the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team as she averaged 14.3 points per game to lead Coastal Carolina to three wins. She connected on 50-percent of her shots from the floor as she hit 14-of-28 tries. Stull was in double-digits in scoring in all three games and hit 15-of-17 attempts from the charity stripe, including an 8-of-8 performance against Wofford. She also finished the week with 19 rebounds, including 11 caroms against Jacksonville on Nov. 22. The guard closed the three-game span with seven assists and eight steals. White Returns to Lineup Sophomore Katie White missed the first three games due to illness, but made her first start against Jacksonville Saturday, Nov. 22. White went 3-for-3 from the field for six points, pulled down seven rebounds and added two blocks for the Chants. Chanticleers Topple Jacksonville 63-44 Junior Amanda Stull scored 13 of her game-high 16 points in the first half, leading the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team a 63-44 victory over Jacksonville (Nov.22). Stull matched a career-high with 16 points and picked up 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Junior Devin Rivers had 13 points while sophomore Sydnei Moss added 11 points for the Chants. Sophomore Katie White was in action for the first time this season and picked up six points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Coastal Carolina dominated the glass outrebounding the Dolphins 46 to 27, including 33 defensive boards. Moss Sets Career High Sophomore Sydnei Moss scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Chanticleers to a 67-64 win at Wofford (Nov. 19). Moss tallied 17 of her 22 points in the second half, hitting 6-of-11 shots from the floor and added a team-best eight rebounds. Free-For-All Gives the Chants a 67-64 Win At Wofford Coastal Carolina went 25-for-29 at the free throw line in the 67-64 win over Wofford (Nov. 19). The Chanticleers shot 86.2 percent from the line, while Wofford shot 50 percent (14-28). Junior Amanda Stull was 8-of-8, while sophomore Sydnei Moss went 9-for-12 from the charity stripe. Redshirt freshman Courtney Grambley was 4-of-4 and sophomore Jessica Noll hit both her free throws when she stepped up to the line. Turnovers=Points Coastal Carolina forced Campbell to turn the ball over 29 times, which led to 29 Chanticleer points as they defeated the Camels 52-50 (Nov. 17). Coastal Carolina scored 17 of its 19 first half points off of Campbell’s 21 turnovers. Stull Switches Gears, Leads Chants to 52-50 Win Over Campbell Junior Amanda Stull scored a driving layup with 46 seconds remaining in the game to put the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (2-0) up for good as it squeezed out a 52-50 victory over Campbell (1-1) Monday, Nov. 17 at Kimbel Arena. Stull went 6-of-8 in the second half to score all of her 13 points. Sophomore Kate Jasinski scored a game-high 14 points and added five assists, while sophomore Sydnei Moss picked up eight rebounds in the win. LeForce Earns 400th Career Win With the 65-49 win over Erskine Friday, Nov. 14, Coastal Carolina Head Coach Alan LeForce earned his 400th career win. LeForce is in his 12th season as the Chanticleers’ mentor and has compiled a 160-150 record at Coastal Carolina and a 400-330 overall record in 25 seasons as a head coach. LeForce is the all-time winningest women’s basketball coach in Coastal Carolina history and is the only coach to win 100 games in both Division I men’s and women’s basketball. Bench Blasts Erskine The Coastal Carolina bench outscored Erskine’s reserves 23-5 in the season opener, en route to a 65-49 victory for the Chants. Freshman Olivia Irick earned 16 points for the Chants in 17 minutes of play. Redshirt sophomore Lauren Grochowski had five points, while redshirt freshman Courtney Grambley had two points in the win. All Aboard!!! For the fourth consecutive season, Coastal Carolina will have the same coaching staff on the bench. Head Coach Alan LeForce enters his 12th season at the helm for the Chants. All assistant coaches return with Frank Moorhead starting his seventh season, Mark Kost begins his sixth and Shameka Montgomery starts her fourth year. This staff has put together a squad that has gone 61-40 (.604) in the past four seasons. New Faces The Chanticleers welcome four newcomers to the team in transfers Kendra Reynolds and Lindsey Waters and freshmen Taylor Epley and Olivia Irick. Reynolds, a junior transfer from Olney Central JC, sat out the first half of the season due to NCAA regulations and Waters will miss the entire season after transferring from Eastern Kentucky. Chants Send Fleet Flying with 65-49 Win Junior Devin Rivers and sophomore Sydnei Moss recorded double-doubles to lead the Chanticleers to a 65-49 win over Erskine Nov. 14. Rivers had 12 points and matched a personal best grabbing 10 rebounds. Moss tallied 12 points and collected a career-high 13 rebounds. Coastal Carolina led by as many as 21 points in the first half. Up 52-37 in the second half, Erskine strung together the next eight points, cutting the deficit to seven points at 52-45 with 8:07 remaining, but Coastal Carolina went on a 13-3 run to close out the game.
