Women's Basketball Falls to Radford 66-46 in Big South Opener

Despite a season-high 14 points from senior Demaria Young (Memphis, Tenn./Walters State C.C.), the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (9-3, 0-1 Big South) fell in its conference opener 66-46 to Radford University (8-6, 1-0 Big South) Jan. 14 in Radford, Va.  Coastal trailed 27-26 at halftime, but a 10-0 run in the second half was the difference.   The first half had four lead changes and one tie as the Highlanders took a one-point lead at halftime.  Radford led 6-2 on a Sarah Stephens layup at 15:10, but layups from senior Kim Turner (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C.) and Young tied it at six at 13:57.  Radford led by as many as eight at 5:42 on a layup from Tameisha Carter, but the Lady Chanticleers would battle back.  Young hit a three at 5:06 to make it 21-16.  A layup from sophomore Joanna Pekonen (Lappeenranta, Finland/Lafayette) and a Young jumper made it a 21-20 game.  Coastal took the lead at 1:39 on a jumper from junior Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill).  With 58 seconds left, Young gave Coastal another one-point lead on a jumper in the paint, but Stephens gave Radford the lead on a jumper with 33 seconds left.   Young had 11 first-half points on 5-of-6 shooting.  Coastal shot 37.9 percent from the field, but was outrebounded 26-16.  Shavon Earp had eight first-half rebounds for the Highlanders, while Stephens had eight points.   Coastal took its last lead on a layup from senior Amber Rose (Bloomington Springs, Tenn./Upperman) at 17:14, making it 30-29 CCU.  At 15:51, Turner made 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game at 31, but four points by Kelli Darden and three-pointers from Earp and Serena White gave Radford the 41-31 lead at 13:11.  The Highlanders then extended it to 14 (47-33) on a layup from Johnette Walker, and kept it in double digits until the end. Coastal shot 22.6 percent (7-of-31) from the field in the second half.   Young led Coastal with 14 points, while Rose added 12.  Dill had six rebounds to lead the Lady Chants.  For Radford, Walker had 15 points, eight rebounds and six steals.  Stephens and Darden had 14 points apiece.   Five Radford players had eight or more rebounds, led by Earp’s 10.    Coastal stays on the road to face Liberty University Monday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m.   NOTES:  Coastal fell in its Big South opener for the second straight season… Young was two points off her career high, set last season at North Carolina… Radford had 17 offensive rebounds in their 50 total boards.
