Dill Scores 1,000th Career Point But Women's Basketball Falls to Liberty 58-54

More Information:

CONWAY, S.C. – Senior Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) scored 25 points, including her 1,000th career point, but a late rally by the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (9-5, 0-1 Big South) fell short in a 58-54 loss to Liberty University (9-7, 1-0 Big South) Jan. 13 in both team’s Big South openers.

Dill eclipsed the 1,000-point mark with 5:22 left in the second half on a three-pointer. She now has 1,009 career points and becomes the 10th player in CCU history and the 51st in Big South history to achieve the feat.

Liberty opened the game by scoring the first five points and led 12-5 on a Michelle Parker jumper at 13:04. Coastal would cut it to two on a Dill three at 11:22. Coastal kept the advantage between three and five the next seven minutes, but a late Liberty run would send the Lady Flames to the lockerroom with a nine-point lead. After Dill hit a jumper at 4:42 to make it 21-18, Megan Frazee answered with a three of her own. A conventional three-point play by Megan Frazee gave Liberty a seven-point lead. Junior Victoria Blanchard (Eutawville, S.C./Walters State C.C.) hit a jumper at 1:45, but a layup from Megan Frazee and a jumper by Parker gave Liberty the 31-22 advantage.

Dill had nine first-half points while freshman Lacey Lyons (Beverly Hills, Fla./Crystal River) added five. Freshman Devin Rivers (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) and senior Vanessa Laug (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) had three rebounds apiece. For Liberty, Megan Frazee had eight points and three rebounds, with Moriah Frazee adding seven points and four caroms.

Coastal shot only 30.8 percent from the field and 2-for-12 from three-point range. Liberty outrebounded Coastal 19-14 and shot 44.4 percent from the field.

LIberty jumped out on an 8-0 run to start the second half, capped by a Jamie Feagin layup at 15:36. Liberty led by as much as 15 points on a Megan Frazee jumper at 11:31, but that’s when Coastal started to chip away. Dill’s three to break the 1,000-point barrier cut the lead to 46-39. After a Megan Frazee jumper brought the Liberty advantage back to nine, a layup from Blanchard and a Dill three made it 48-44 with 2:57 left. Megan Frazee then might have made the biggest play of the game on the next possession, as she made a layup and was fouled, giving the Lady Flames a 51-44 lead. Coastal would again shave the lead to four (53-49) on two free throws from junior C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) at 1:17. Molly Frazee was fouled on the next possession and hit two free throws. Dill then cut it to three on a three-pointer with 37 seconds remaining, but Allyson Fasnacht iced the game with two points from the charity stripe as Liberty won for the 26th straight time over the Lady Chanticleers.

In a matchup between the League’s top two scorers, Dill outscored Megan Frazee 25-24. Dill was 8-of-18 from the field and 5-of-11 from three-point range, while Frazee was 9-of-18 and hit two three-pointers and four free throws.

Rivers added nine points, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals for the Lady Chants. Moriah Frazee led Liberty with six rebounds, while Fasnacht added four assists.

Coastal shot 36.5 percent for the game and hit six three-pointers. Liberty ended the game shooting 44.7 percent and hitting 13 free throws.

Coastal hosts Radford Monday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m, in Kimbel Arena. Liberty is at Charleston Southern the same day also at 7 p.m.
