CONWAY, S.C. - The Elon women's basketball team would fight back from a 14-point second half deficit to defeat Coastal Carolina in overtime, 60-50 in Big South action, Monday night in Kimbel Arena.
Coastal (5-7, 1-3 Big South) opened the game scoring the first nine points of the contest, holding the Phoenix without a point until Milic Milosavljevic's jumper with 10:36 remaining in the first half. The Lady Chants would extend their lead to as high as 12 (17-5), on a Temecca Barnes lay-in with 5:57 left in the first half. Elon would end the opening half on a 11-4 run, narrowing the Lady Chant lead to 21-16 at halftime.
Coastal opened the second half on a 13-6 run in the first 6:18 of the second half to push the Lady Chant lead to 12, at 34-22. Amber Rose would hit a 3-pointer with 7:50 left in the second half, to give CCU its biggest lead of the night at 43-29.
Elon would cut the Coastal lead to 46-45, with :45 seconds remaining in regulation on a three-pointer by Holly Andrews. Coastal would bump the lead back up to three points on a Crystal Brown lay-up with :16 seconds remaining. Elon sophomore Jessica Williams, who hadn't scored all night, drained a three-pointer with one second left in regulation to help send the game to overtime at 48-48.
In the overtime it was all Elon, as the Phoenix scored the first seven points in the extra frame. In all, Elon outscored the Lady Chants, 12-2 in overtime.
Crystal Brown led Coastal scorers with 10 points and added a game-high 12 boards., it was Brown's third double-double of the season. Barnes, along with Whitney Shearer and Cyndie Troutman each chipped in eight points.
Elon (7-6, 3-1 Big South) was lead by Andrews who poured in a game-high 19 points. Courtney Nyborg added 10 for Elon who won their third straight Big South game.
Coastal played the game without the services of junior Nikki Reddick, who was nursing a reoccuring ankle injury.
The Chanticleer returns to action on Friday, January 17 at 6:00 pm ,when they host Winthrop. The game will be shown on the Big South Television Network. Elon returns home to host Radford on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
