CONWAY, S.C. Coastal Carolina women's basketball team had one of its worst shooting nights of the season, losing to Liberty, 67-46, Monday night in Kimbel Arena. The Lady Chants (5-8 overall, 1-2 in the Big South) shot only 31 percent from the field, and had scoring droughts of seven minutes in the first half, and nearly 10 minutes in the second, as Liberty picked up its 14th straight win in the series.
The Lady Flames (7-6, 2-0) didn't fare much better in the opening half, shooting 41 percent themselves, but only managing to build an 18-8 lead as CCU struggled. Liberty switched gears in the second half however, building on a 32-21 halftime lead with an 11-0 run to open the new period, as Whitney Shearer's 3-pointer gave Coastal its first points at the 11:59 mark.
Crystal Peace came off the bench to score a team-high 11 points for the Lady Flames, leading a balanced offense that had 11-of-12 players score, six of whom went for seven points or more. Peace added seven rebounds, while Meribeth Feenstra dominated the middle with nine points, seven boards and four blocks.
Nikki Reddick scored a game-high 13 points for Coastal, but struggled from the floor, hitting just 4-of-17 shots, adding eight rebounds. Whitney Shearer scored 10 points, while Crystal Brown added eight points and 11 boards in the loss.
The Lady Chants hit the road this weekend, playing at High Point on Saturday, Jan. 12, and at Elon Monday, Jan. 14, before returning home Jan. 19 to host Birmingham Southern. The Lady Flames continue their season-long roadtrip, playing at Norfolk State Wednesday Jan. 9.
