Adams Repeats as Sun Belt Player of the Week
NEW ORLEANS, La. - For the second time this season, Jas Adams has been named the Sun Belt Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday. Adams was previously awarded the honor on Dec. 12, and, due to the holiday break, is earning the honor consecutively for all games played since that time.
Adams led Coastal to a 3-1 record over the four games played since Dec. 17, with Coastal suffering its only loss at the hands of #23 Syracuse. Following the setback Coastal won three straight at the HTC Center, including victories over UTA and Texas State to start its Sun Belt run 2-0.
The senior guard from Winston-Salem, N.C., led the Chants averaging 20.3 points in the four games, and was second in rebounding averaging 7.3. Adams scored at least 17 points in all contests, including 22 and 24 versus UTA and Texas State, respectively. She recorded her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds in the victory over Wofford, and was one of the Chants’ best shooters, averaging 44 percent from the field, 46 percent from beyond the arc and 88 percent at the free-throw line.
Adams’ scoring through the first half of the season has been unmatched in the Sun Belt as she leads the league averaging 19.2 points per game. The next highest scorer is Texas State’s Toshua Leavitt (17.4 ppg), while the rest of the conference averages 15 points or fewer.
Adams also leads the Sun Belt in minutes played (36.8) while currently second in 3-pointers made (2.7), fourth in free-throw percentage (85.7) and 10th in rebounding (5.9).
Coastal Carolina plays its first away games of the season this week as it travels to ULM (Jan. 4) and Louisiana (Jan. 6). The Chants’ only three games played outside of the HTC Center this year have all been neutral-site contests as part of the San Juan Shootout and Carolinas Challenge.
Coastal is playing at both schools for the first time in program history. The Chants split a pair of games against ULM and Louisiana at the HTC Center last season, defeating the Warhawks 75-48 on Feb. 23 before falling to the Ragin’ Cajuns 71-68 on Feb. 25.
