The Coastal Carolina University womens basketball team (6-2) won its third game in a row and improved to 4-0 at home with 78-42 win over Savannah State University (1-14) Jan. 2 in Conway, S.C. Coastal led by 10 at the break and then held the Tigers to 18 points in the second half to cruise to the victory.Savannah State had its only lead as Crystal Morris scored the first two points at 19:06. Coastal would then go on a 12-0 run that was capped by a three from senior Amber Rose (Bloomington Springs, Tenn./Upperman). The Lady Chanticleers would lead by as many as 18 points (26-8) in the first half on a jumper from junior Calisha Yates (Columbus, Ind./Chattanooga State C.C.) at 9:21. The Tigers would end the half on a 16-8 run which included a layup by Antoinette Williams with 48 seconds left.
Yates led Coastal with nine points and six rebounds in the first half. Rose added seven points and sophomore C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) had five rebounds and six assists. The Lady Chanticleers shot 43.8 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Tigers 26-19. Savannah State was led by Shaunte Carter with seven first-half points.
Coastal held Savannah State to 25 percent shooting in the second half and a 12-0 run to start the second half put Coastal up 46-24 at 14:46. The lead grew to 30 (61-31) on senior Jasmine Tylers (Jacksonville, Fla./Okaloosa C.C.) jumper at 7:14. Coastal shot 56.7 percent in the second half and was 9-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Yates had 15 points and eight rebounds, scoring in double figures for the seventh time this season. Turner had 13 points, five rebounds and three blocks. Rose was Coastals third player in double figures with 12 points, while Ware had six boards and a career-high seven assists.
Coastal shot 50 percent for the first time this season. They also had 48 rebounds, two off a season high.
Savannah State was led by Williams, who had 13 points and seven boards.
Coastal has less than 24 hours before its next game. The Lady Chants host Coker Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 5 p.m. The game can be heard on THE TEAM 93.9 FM in Myrtle Beach.
