Adams Lifts Coastal Past Fort Wayne in Overtime
CONWAY - After surrendering a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, Coastal Carolina (4-4) responded by outscoring Fort Wayne (2-6) 11-2 in overtime to defeat the Mastodons, 67-58, Monday night at the HTC Center. The Chanticleers were aided in the victory by Jas Adams' 29 points, a career high for the senior guard.
It was Adam's third 20-plus point performance of the season, following her 25 points versus UNC Wilmington and 28 points versus Nebraska. She finished 9-of-15 from the floor -- including a season high of seven 3-pointers -- and made all four free throw attempts.
Coastal shot 45.3 percent to Fort Wayne's 34.9 percent, while the Mastodons held a 41-33 rebounding advantage.
Coastal opened the game shooting over 50 percent from the field to lead 15-14 at the end of the first quarter. Fort Wayne made just four of its 16 field goal attempts in the opening period, but all four of its baskets were 3-point makes off the fingertips of Repp. Jaelencia Williams supplied the Mastodon's final two points at the line.
Coastal widened its lead to nine points just over a minute into the second quarter thanks to a streak of eight unanswered points to open the frame. The Chants remained in front by at least six points for the remainder of the quarter, and stretched their advantage to double figures for the first time with a last-second jumper by Isuwa Oghagbon as the half expired. Adams led with seven points in the quarter, and Williams added six.
The first five minutes of the second half saw Fort Wayne outscore Coastal 9-2 to cut the Chants' lead to three. The run was capped by Repp's fifth 3-pointer of the game, and first basket since the opening quarter. A layup from Williams halted Fort Wayne's streak, and the sides traded baskets for the remainder of quarter, allowing Coastal to carry a four-point lead in the final 10 minutes.
Coastal appeared to have the game in hand after scoring nine unanswered points over a three-minute span during the final quarter. Williams opened the run with consecutive layups before Adams hit a 3-pointer and Hamilton a short jumper. A pair of Fort Wayne free throws broke the streak, but the Mastodons went scoreless for over three minutes as Coastal rebuilt its double-digit lead. The Chants then went scoreless for the final 5:14 of regulation while Fort Wayne scored 10 unanswered to force overtime.
Adams once again led Coastal in the overtime period, sinking two 3-pointers and a pair of free throws.
The Chants remain at home to host North Carolina Central for a 6 p.m. game Friday at the HTC Center.
