Jordan's Career-High Leads Chants Past Brevard
Nov. 13, 2013
CONWAY - Four days after setting a new career-high in the point column, AJ Jordan broke that high as she poured in 25 points to lead Coastal Carolina to an 85-42 win over Brevard College on Wednesday evening at The HTC Center.
Jordan led all scorers with her 25 points on 11-of-19 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line. She also pulled down 12 rebounds, six on both the offensive and defensive glass, to finish with her first double-double of the season. Kayla Cook also reached double-digits with a 14-point performance, while collecting nine rebounds. Katelyn Connor was Coastal's third-leading scorer with 10 points to go along with her eight rebounds.
Brevard (0-1) was led by Katie Williams' 17 points on 5-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe.
The Chanticleers (2-0) finished the contest shooting 46.7 percent from the field and 70.6 percent from the free-throw line. The Brevard shot 26.9 percent overall and an even 50 percent at the stripe. Coastal dominated the glass to the tune of a 55-31 advantage. The Chants, who turned 29 Tornado turnovers into 40 points, also controlled the paint, producing 44 points to Brevard's six.
Each of Coastal's five starters - Henry, Jordan, Olivia Carlton, Megan Pittman and Connor - scored in the opening 3:40 to put the Chants up 11-4. From that point on it was all Coastal on both ends of the floor. The white-clad Chanticleers scored 13 of the next 14 points to take a 24-5 lead at the under 12 media timeout.
Savanah Pippin closed Coastal's 23-11 half-ending run with a steal at midcourt and a layup on the other end, pushing Coastal to a 47-16 lead at the break.
The second half played much more even over the opening 10 minute as Brevard matched each of Coastal's shots. However, with Coastal holding a 70-37 lead with 7:04 remaining in the game, Jordan took over and went on a solo 10-point run to erase any thoughts of a Brevard comeback.
Another layup by Pippin and an old-fashioned three-point by play by Cook added to Coastal's lead and produced the 85-42 final.
The Chanticleers head to North Carolina Central on Sunday, Nov. 17 for their first road game of the season. Tipoff at the Eagles' McDougland-McLendon Gymnasium is set for 4 p.m. Coastal defeated North Carolina Central 58-39 in the programs inaugural game in The HTC Center on Nov. 12, 2012.
