Feb. 27, 2014
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Coastal Carolina rallied back from an 18-point second-half deficit to take a two-point lead with 2:12 remaining in regulation, but Gardner-Webb immediately answered with an old-fashioned 3-point play and held on for an 80-73 victory in women's basketball action on Thursday night inside Paul Porter Arena.
After the Runnin' Bulldogs regained their lead on Candace Brown's 3-point play, Coastal (13-14, 9-10 Big South) kept the game with two possessions before being forced to play the foul game in the final minute. Gardner-Webb (15-13, 10-9 Big South) sealed the victory, its 12th of the season at home, with six free throws in the final 29 seconds.
Angelica Henry and Megan Pittman co-led four Chanticleers in double-figures with 15 points. Katelyn Connor scored 12, while Alexx Puckett picked up her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Pittman was the game's most efficient shooter, scoring her points on 5-of-7 from the floor, including a trio of second-half 3-pointers.
Gardner-Webb was led by Catrina Green's 15-point, 12-rebound double-double. Joining Green in double-figures were Brown (14), Jasmine Dale (14), Mayhana Dunovant (13) and Jessica Heilig (10).
Coastal ended the game shooting 52.9% (27-of-51) from the floor, but were hindered by 20 turnovers, including 15 in the first half, that led to 25 Runnin' Bulldog points. Gardner-Webb won the battle on the boards 35-28, including 17 on the offensive end that produced 15 second chance points.
Gardner-Webb took advantage of five straight turnovers by the Chanticleers and built a 7-0 lead over the opening four minutes of the contest. Coastal battled back to within three points at 16-13 with 11:29 to play before the half, but the Runnin' Bulldogs responded with a 20-10 run over the ensuing nine minutes to take a 13-point lead at 36-23. Coastal took advantage at the line and Henry contributed a fastbreak layup as the Chants closed the Gardner-Webb lead to 38-28 at the half.
Coastal scored the first basket of the second half, cutting its deficit to eight points. However, Gardner-Webb then rattled off the game's next nine points, including four off turnovers, to take a 47-30 lead.
Trailing 53-35 with 14:11 to play following a Brown 3-point play, Coastal started its comeback. Henry scored in the paint and Megan Pittman followed with a jumper before Puckett scored on a mid-range shot following a Gardner-Webb score. Pittman then made her first three of the game, cutting Coastal's deficit to 56-44 with more than 10 minutes to play.
Green pushed the Runnin' Bulldogs back up by 14 with a pair at the line, but the ensuing three minutes belonged to the Chanticleers. Jordan got things started with one of her patented free-throw line jumpers and Pittman followed with a trey from the top of the arc. Following a stop on the defensive end, Pittman again found herself alone for a 3-pointer at the top of the key. Sims then scored in the paint following of a timeout and Coastal forced another empty G-WU possession. Sims closed the 13-0 Coastal run with a three from the right corner, giving the Chanticleers their first lead of the game at 58-57 with 6:20 remaining.
The teams traded baskets and stops over the next 3:09 before Henry sank a 3-pointer, giving the Chanticleers a 68-66 lead with 2:12 to play. Brown scored her game-changing 3-point play on the following possession, propelling Gardner-Webb to the win.
