Puckett and Connor Lead Chants to Senior Day Victory
Feb. 22, 2014
CONWAY - On a day where Coastal Carolina's outside shots wouldn't fall in the second half, senior post players Alexx Puckett and Katelyn Connor scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, to shoulder the load and lead the Chanticleers to a 57-50 victory over Presbyterian College.
In addition to leading Coastal in points, Puckett was also the game's leading rebounder with nine. AJ Jordan also scored in double-figures with 12 points as the Chanticleers improved to 13-14 overall and 9-9 in Big South play.
The win snapped Coastal's four-game losing skid against Presbyterian (10-18, 8-11 Big South) and ended the Blue Hose's string of three straight wins.
PC's Keyonna Allen led all scorers with 20 points as she went 9-of-13 from the floor and 2-of-4 from the charity stripe.
Coastal opened the game with scores on its first three possessions to take a 7-0 lead before PC's Allen put the Blue Hose on the board with a layup at the 17:48 mark. The Chants continued its offensive onslaught over the next six minutes, expanding their lead to 11 points at 20-9. Holding a 25-15 lead, Angelica Henry drained her 36th 3-pointer of the season, giving Coastal a 13-point lead -- its largest of the first half. The teams exchanged two buckets and two free throws the remainder of the half, leaving the Chanticleers up 34-23 at the break.
After back-to-back baskets from Connor, Puckett gave CCU a 43-27 lead, its largest lead of the game, with an old-fashioned 3-point play at the 15:06 mark. Presbyterian responded with a 15-2 run, which included eight points in the paint, over next eight minutes to cut Coastal's lead to a single point at 45-44.
Connor slowed the Blue Hose's momentum with a pair at the free-throw line, but PC's Allen answered back with a layup on the next possession. However, the Chanticleers refused to waiver as Karsen Sims responded with two free throws and Jena Hamrick scored in the paint. On Coastal's next possession, Connor collected a pair of offensive rebounds before sinking a hook shot in the lane, giving the Chants a 53-46 lead with 2:46 to play.
Allen then scored for the Blue Hose out of a timeout, but Connor kept the Chants ahead by seven with her fifth and final basket of the game. PC's Karlee Taylor cut Coastal's lead to 55-50 with 1:16 remaining, but the Chants buckled down defensively and held the visitors scoreless the rest of the way en route to the 57-50 victory.
Coastal finished the contest shooting 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the floor, including 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from 3-point range. Presbyterian shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56) overall, including 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from three. Coastal took advantage at the free-throw line, making 12-of-13 attempts, while the Blue Hose went 4-of-7 at the stripe. The Chanticleers also won the rebounding battle by a 37-36 margin.
Following the game seniors Katelyn Connor, Kayla Cook, Angelica Henry and Alexx Puckett were presented with framed jerseys in honor of their accomplishments and contributions to the Coastal Carolina women's basketball program.
Coastal Carolina next travels to Gardner-Webb for a pivotal matchup on Thursday, Feb. 27. Tipoff from the Runnin' Bulldogs' Paul Porter Arena is set for 7 p.m. Presbyterian returns to action on Feb. 27, hosting Charleston Southern.
