CONWAY, S.C. - Spurred by a 26-2 first-half run, the Coastal Carolina University women's basketball squad earned a 60-41 Big South Conference win over visiting UNC Asheville in Kimbel Arena, Feb. 8. With the victory, the Chanticleers moved to 14-8 overall and 5-5 in Big South Play, while the Bulldogs fell to 6-17 and 1-9 in the league.
UNC Asheville built a 10-3 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Two Katie Ahaus free throws and an Amanda Stull lay-in topped off with a successful shot from the stripe for the three-point play began a 26-2 Chanticleer run over the next 12 minutes to put the hosts up 29-12. The Bulldogs hit two jumpers in the final minute of the first half, but still trailed 29-16 at the intermission. The Chants forced 16 turnovers resulting in 22 points. UNC Asheville was held to only 35 percent (7-for-20) shooting, but out rebounded Coastal 19-11 in the first stanza. Junior Katie White led the scoring in the first half with eight.
The Chants began the second with an 8-0 run, building a 21-point lead at 37-16 with 15:52 to play. Lindsey Montgomery caught fire for the Bulldogs, scoring six straight points and helped an 8-0 Bulldog run over 3:32 to trim the Coastal lead to 39-24. The teams exchanged baskets for the next five minutes, with UNCA getting within 14 points at 49-35 off a Kendall Shepard lay-up with 5:43 left on the clock, but that was as close as the guests would get. Senior Devin Rivers responded with a bucket, and three charity shots from White and Stull put away all hopes for the Bulldogs.
The Chants finished the game shooting 45.7 (21-for-46) from the floor, with 20 points from the paint, while dishing out 17 assists. UNCA was held to shooting 33.3 percent (16-for-48) from the field. UNCA grabbed 35 boards as opposed to Coastal's 29.
Stull led three Coastal players in double figures with 12 points, while White and Moss added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Coastal capitalized on 23 UNCA turnovers for a 28-7 scoring advantage off of turnovers. Montgomery and Shepard led the Bulldogs with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
The Chanticleers will begin a four-game road trip, starting with Charleston Southern on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs will also play on Feb. 13 when they return home to face Presbyterian at 2 p.m.
