CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina women’s basketball team fell to Gardner-Webb 45-34 in Big South Conference action on Monday, Jan. 17 at Kimbel Arena.
The setback drops Coastal to 6-10 (0-4, Big South) on the season, while Gardner-Webb, who entered the game ranked 21 in the CollegeInsider Mid-Major Top 25, improves to 12-6 (4-1, Big South).
Coastal Carolina’s freshman Shanika Maddox opened the scoring in contest as she converted the front end of a one-and-one after being fouled just 22 seconds after tip-off. Over the next 13 minutes Gardner-Webb would pull out to as much as an eight point lead over the home team. The Chants would battle back to cut the Runnin’ Bulldogs lead down to four points heading into the intermission.
After halftime Sydnei Moss brought the Chants within two points of Gardner-Webb’s lead at 20-18 as she tipped in the rebound off a Katie Ahaus jumper that rimmed out.
From that point on it was all Gardner-Webb as the Runnin’ Bulldogs used a 22-6 run to go up by 18 points and pull away from the Chanticleers for good.
The Chants finished the game on a 10-3 run over the final 2:50 of play to close Gardner-Webb’s advantage to eleven at the final buzzer.
Gardner Webb’s Dominique Hudson led all scores in the game with 14 points on 5-of-10 from the field with three treys.
The Chanticleers were led by Olivia Irick ’s and Moss’ 10 points apiece. The game was Moss’ second consecutive ten point performance since coming back from an injury. Irick’s double digit scoring effort was her eleventh of the season and eighth in the past nine games.
The Chanticleers will take to the road for the first of four consecutive games away from Kimbel Arena as it plays at High Point on Saturday, Jan 22. Tip-off from the Panthers’ Millis center is set for 4 p.m.
Gardner-Webb will host Presbyterian in its next game on Monday, Jan. 24.
