Scoring Drought Foils Chanticleers at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Despite a season-high 25 points from Angelica Henry, the Coastal Carolina women's basketball team was unable to survive a five-plus minute scoring drought in the second half as Campbell overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to claim a 75-68 win on Saturday afternoon.
The loss moves Coastal's record to 8-7 on the season and 4-2 in the Big South. Campbell's win, which broke a three-game losing skid, improved the squad to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in league play.
Henry led five Chanticleers in double-figures with her 25 points on nine made baskets, including four from 3-point range. Freshman Karsen Sims scored 12 points on four made triples, while Katelyn Connor scored 11. Alexx Puckett and AJ Jordan each chipped in 10 points.
The Fighting Camels were led by Kiera Gaines 26-point, 17-rebound double-double. Roslyn Presley poured in 19 points and D Janelle Brown added 10 points to round out the Camels in double-figures.
Campbell, who trailed 31-23 at the half, shot 63 percent from the floor and outscored the Chanticleers 52-37 over the final 20 minutes of play. The Camels opened the second half on a 10-5 run aided by a pair of 3-pointer from Gaines and RaeChaun Edwards to cut Coastal's lead to 36-33. Henry and Jordan then scored on back-to-back possessions for the Chants to restore a seven-point advantage with 15:53 remaining. However, Campbell responded with an 11-3 run over the ensuing 1:36, taking a 44-43 lead.
Coastal countered with an 8-0 run as Sims and Henry bookended a Puckett layup, pushing the score to 51-44 in the Chants favor. A 6-2 Campbell scoring streak left Coastal ahead by three at the under eight media timeout. The Chants would go cold from the field over the next 5:31 as Campbell pieced together an 18-5 run, en route to a 68-58 lead. The Camel hot streak featured 14 consecutive points by Gaines
Minutes later Coastal closed the Campbell lead to five points at 70-65 with 1:25 remaining in regulation as Henry connected on her third trey of the afternoon. Henry would sink a final 3-pointer in the waning seconds, but Campbell sealed the victory with six free throws in the final 42 seconds.
Coastal used a balanced scoring attack from its veterans along with lockdown defense en route to a 31-23 halftime lead. Henry led all scorers at the half with 10 points on from the floor, including a 3-pointer. Connor was right behind Henry with nine points after scoring four of the Chants first six points of the game. Jordan and Puckett each scored six points in the first 20-minute stanza.
Coastal shot 43.8 percent from the floor for the half, while limiting the Camels to only 25.8 percent.
The first 12 minutes of play was a back and forth affair with neither team able to take more than a four point lead. Coastal then clamped down on the defensive end and held the Fighting Camels to two field goals and four free throws over the final 9:18 of the half. During that stretch, the Chants scored 15 points on six buckets from the field and freebies by Connor and Henry.
Coastal closed the game shooting 42.4 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc. Campbell shot 43.1 percent overall and owned a 41-39 advantage on the boards. Coastal controlled the paint to a 28-24 advantage, while the Camels turned 20 Chanticleer turnovers into 28 points.
Coastal Carolina returns to play on Monday, Jan. 13 hosting Winthrop at 7 p.m. Campbell next plays at Gardner-Webb on Thursday, Jan. 16.
