Chanticleers Fall To High Point
Jan. 10, 2013
CONWAY - Cheyenne Parker, a 6-4 junior center, had game-highs of 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead High Point to its fifth consecutive win in beating Coastal Carolina, 70-54, Thursday night at The HTC Center. Parker, who came into the game as the NCAA Division I rebounds leader, averaging 14 rebounds a game, was one of three scorers in double figures for the Panthers, who improved to 10-6 overall and 4-1 in the Big South. Coastal slipped to 7-8, 2-3.
Parker, from Queens, N.Y., also came into the game as the NCAA leader in blocks, with an average of 4.3 per game. She had just three blocks on this night, but she collected her 13th double-double of the season. Stacia Robertson, a 6-2 sophomore forward, added 15 points, including a couple of 3-pointers, and reserve Lexi Patterson had 10 points.
Shatia Cole, a 5-5 sophomore guard who came off the bench due to a slight injury after starting 11 games this season, scored 14 points to lead the Chanticleers. AJ Jordan added 11 points and Angelica Henry added 10. Savanah Pippin led the team with eight rebounds. The Chanticleers played without the direction of head coach Alan LeForce, who was ill.
Coastal led for only 15 seconds in the game - when Cole hit a 3-pointer to put the Chanticleers in front 19-18 with just under nine minutes remaining in the first half. But High Point roared back with a 21-4 run to take a commanding 39-23 lead. Robertson contributed eight points in the run while Parker had six while Coastal went seven minutes without a point.
Jordan scored on a layup near the eight-minute mark but the Chanticleers didn't tally again until Henry drove the lane and converted a traditional three-point play to make the score 39-26 with just under a minute left in the period.
Parker had 11 of her points in the first half, while Robertson had 10 in the period. The Panthers held their largest lead over the first 20 minutes at the half, 44-26. But after the Chanticleers trimmed the halftime lead to 14 points, High Point recovered with an 11-5 run to take a 58-37 lead with 13 minutes left and the Panthers held at least a 20-point lead until less than 3 minutes remained.
The Panthers' biggest lead was at 27 points when Patterson hit a jumper to make the score 66-39 with eight minutes left.
