Men's Cross Country Earns Fourth Place at the Big South Championships
LYNCHBURG, VA. -- The CoastalCarolinaUniversity men's cross country team finished fourth at the 2008 New Balance Big South Cross Country Championships in Lynchburg, Va. The Chanticleers scored 134 points, improving on their sixth place showing at last year's Championships.
The Chanticleers' top runner was junior Jamie McCarthy (Riverstick, Ireland/North Monastery) who finished fifth out of 72 competitors with a time of 25:37.37. With a fifth-place finish, McCarthy earned a spot on the Big South All-Conference team.
"Jamie ran a great race," Head Coach Jeff Jacobscommented. "He has really come back from a down year last year. It's good to see him back as one of the elite runners of the conference."
Running in his first Big South Championship race was freshman Kyle Kling (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville), who clicked in a time of 26:27.92 to finish 12th. Kling's main competition was freshman Anthony Berkis of High Point, who finished just ahead of him to take ninth place.
"Kyle ran a good race with the upperclassmen," Jacobs said. "He was the second freshman to cross the line, so it was a good performance for him on this tough course."
Sophomores Kevin Davis' (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro Horsham) time of 28:27.04 and Travis Owens' (FortMill, S.C./Fort Mill) time of 28:51.97 made them the next Chants across the line finishing 39th and 42nd, respectively.
"Travis' race really stood out here," Jacobs continued. "Running in only his second race of the year, he really stepped up for the team and without his run, we may have been in trouble to hold fourth place."
The next group of Chanticleers nabbed spots 50 to 52 as Junior Ryan Caputo (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights), redshirt freshman Rob Delviscio (Morton, Pa./Ridley), and Junior David Mead (Columbia, S.C./Ridgeview) crossed the finish line together.
"Overall, I thought the guys ran well. I'm satisfied with the result for this year and certainly look to do better in the future. It was a very difficult course and challenging for us, but the good thing is all of our guys still have eligibility left so if we can get everyone healthy, we look to do better next year. We still have one race left and we are looking to gain some experience from that meet, especially running a 10k course."
Host Liberty claimed the team title for the fourth consecutive year with 28 points. Liberty took home the individual crown as redshirt sophomore Sam Chelenga paced the field with a time of 24:32.97. High Point followed the Flames, finishing second with 64 points, while VMI took third with 79 points. Coastal Carolina finished ahead of UNC Asheville (147 points), Winthrop (151 points), Radford (151 points), Gardner-Webb (224 points) and Charleston Southern (240 points).
Coastal Carolina next competes at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships (10k) on Saturday, Nov. 15 in Winston-Salem, N.C. The race is set for .
