CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina University men's and women's cross country teams will host the 2011 Big South Championships presented by UCS and Musco Lighting on Saturday, October 29 at the Quail Creek Golf Club course. The men's 8-kilometer race will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the women's 5-kilometer race will follow at 11:30 a.m.
Saturday marks the first time since 2003 that Coastal has had the privilege of hosting the Championships.
The Chanticleers are one of only five Big South schools to claim multiple league crowns. Coastal last claimed the title in 1996 preceded by championships in 1995 and 1993. Liberty has won 12 championships, including the past six straight.
This season, the Chants have been paced by freshmen Joseph Keitt and Evan Niciphor. Keitt claimed the individual title in his first collegiate meet at the South Carolina Gamecock Open as he led Coastal to a first place finish at the event. Niciphor has led the Chanticleer across the finish line in each of the four 8k races this season. Niciphor placed ninth at the CCU Invitational/Big South Preview with a season-best 8K time of 25:47. Keitt placed second for the Chants in the event in a 26:20 clip. Fellow freshman and Myrtle Beach native Zach Hensel has continued to impress this season as he has turned in 8k personal-bests in each of the Chants past two events.
Senior Rob Delviscio will be making his final Big South Championship appearance on Saturday. Last season Delviscio turned in a 29:44 at the course in Blacksburg, Va. Also competing for the Chants are junior Spencer Lange and sophomore Cameron Wells. Both Lange and Wells have turned in personal-best 8K times this season. Lange's came at the CCU Invitational/Big South Preview as he finished the course in 28:48, while Wells' came in a 27:36 time at the Blue Ridge Mountain Open.
