CONWAY- The men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the Blue Ridge Open hosted by Appalachian State on Friday, Oct. 15. The 5k women's race is slated for a 3 p.m. start with the starting gun firing for the 8k men's race at 3:45 p.m.

The 18 team Blue Ridge Open field will feature teams mostly from the Big South and Southern Conference including High Point, Gardner-Webb, VMI, Appalachian State, UNC Wilmington, Furman, Western Carolina, and College of Charleston. Also in the field are Southeastern Conference members Kentucky and Mississippi State along with Virginia Tech and Duke of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Chanticleers women's cross country team enters the meet coming off a third place finish at the Walt Disney World Cross Country Classic on Oct. 9. Of the Chanticleers four meet this season three have been of the 5k distance and one 6k. Coastal finished in the top three of the 5k race including a first place finish in the Coastal Carolina Invitational. The team's lone 6k race was the Roy Griak Invitational that featured eight on the top 30 nationally ranked team by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Jamie Brusa has been the consistent leader for the Chants as she has paced the team in three of the four meet including the Disney Classic with a 5k time of 18:19. The Walt Disney World Classic also saw Emily Marchini (18:24), Christian Johnson (18:29), Seanna Kautz (18:38), and Jessica Dennison (18:43) finish within a mere 14 seconds of each to place second through fifth respectively for the Chants.

With the Big South Championships slated for October 30, Coastal will use this meet as a final tune-up before traveling to Radford at the end of the month in search of their 13th conference crown.

"The team has trained hard this week and are looking forward to competing and improving against some good competition," said head coach Alan Connie. "Although this meet, like all meets, is important; our team has their eyes on the bigger prizes at the Big South Championships and NCAA Regional meets."

The men's team will be looking to improve on the season as this will be the second consecutive 8k meet the Chants have competed in with the last being the Big South Preview on Sept. 25.

Junior Kyle Kling was the top finisher for the Chanticleers in last year's meet leading the team to a fourth place finish out of 19 teams with a time of 25:25, good for eighth place overall. Kling has continued to lead the Chants this season finishing in the top five of the team's three meets this season including a fourth place finish in the Big South Preview with a time of 26:32.16.

Looking to build upon their early season performances is junior Rob Delviscio, sophomore Spencer Lange, and freshmen Cameron Wells and Andre Enoch. Each runner has shown steady improvement through the course of the season as the gap between the second and fifth finisher has steadily shrunk.

"The team is looking forward to the race after having the past three weeks to train since the Big South Preview," said head coach Jeff Jacobs. "During the weeks without competition, we got in some really good workouts that should pay dividends at this meet."
