Men's Cross Country Competes at Paul Short Run

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Coastal Carolina men’s cross country team finished 29th out of 41 teams at the 34th annual Brooks Paul Short Run in the Men's College Brown Championship 8K Race. The Chanticleers totaled 762 points, finishing ahead of fellow Big South Conference teams Radford and VMI.

 

During the Brown Championship Race, comprised of Division I and ranked non-Division I teams, sophomore John Heron (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) was the Chants' best finisher in 97th with a 25:50 time. Senior Blair Paul (Queenston, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill) placed 112th in 25:58, while sophomore Jamie McCarthy (Riverstick, Cork Co., Ireland/North Monastery) clocked in at 26:12 for 141st. Senior Jake Morris (Aiken, S.C./Aiken) finished 194th in 26:39. Both freshman Kevin Davis (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro Horrsham) and sophomore Ryan Caputo (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) posted 8K personal bests. Davis clocked in at 27:05 for 218th place, while Caputo finished 245th in 27:53. Leg cramps prevented sophomore Max Hacker (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West) from finishing the race.

 
Villanova won the race with 50 points as Bobby Curtis posted the top time of 23:39.


A trio of freshman competed in the College Men's JV race with Travis Owens (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) finishing in 184th place in 28:11. David Mead (Columbia, S.C./Ridgeview) placed 248th (28:56), while Mike Kimmel (Dilsburg, Pa./Northern) finished 293rd (29.24).

 

“We had an off day,” head coach Jeff Jacobs said. “We’re going to try to regroup for the pre-nationals coming up.”

 

Coastal will compete in the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., Oct. 13. The “B” team will travel to Johns Island, S.C. to compete in the Low Country Invitational.
