The Coastal Carolina University mens and womens cross country teams finished second and third, respectively, at the University of North Carolina Cross Country Challenge Sept. 18, at the Ranson-Hamrick Cross Country Course in Chapel Hill, N.C. Coastal faced the Tarheels and the UNC Alumni team in the race.
On the mens side, the Chanticleers scored 47 points, behind UNCs 29. The UNC Alumni Team finished third with 49 points. Leading the way for Coastal was senior Terah Kipchiris (Kitale, Kenya/Saboti Secondary) who won the 8K race in 25:14. It is his second win in as many weeks. Junior Nelson Oliveria (Coimbra, Portugal/Quintas das Flores) finished eighth in 25:58, while sophomore Doug Currie (Sarnia, Ontario/Sarnia Northern) finished ninth in 26:02. Junior Johnny Mitchell (Duncan, S.C./Byrnes) was 16th in a time of 26:39 and freshman Blair Paul (South Queenstown, Ontario) was 17th in 26:43.
Both teams will travel to Cary, N.C., Friday, Oct. 1 for the Great American Cross Country Invitational. The race begins at 6 p.m.
