CHANTICLEERS WIN THE GAMECOCK OPEN: For the second year in a row, the Coastal Carolina University men’s cross country team won the opening meet of the season, capturing the team title at the Gamecock Open 5k with five of the seven Chanticleers finishing in the top eight. Sophomore Kyle Kling claimed the individual crown with a time of 15:19.39. Not far behind was freshman Jarod Williams, who finished third with a time of 15:42.74. Last year’s Gamecock Open winner, senior Jamie McCarthy finished fourth overall with his time of 15:44.40. Redshirt junior Max Hacker finished sixth overall at 15:55.27 and freshman Josh Tormasi followed at seventh with a time of 15:56.52. Senior Ryan Caputo finished with a personal-best time of 16:11.12 to put him in 12th place and redshirt junior David Mead rounded out the team coming in 35th with a time of 17:28.47.

KLING BIG SOUTH RUNNER OF THE WEEK: Sophomore Kyle Kling was named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week announced by the League office on Sept. 10. Kling won the Gamecock Open with a 5k time of 15:19.39 Friday, Sept. 4 in Columbia, S.C. He was ahead of his opponent by 22 seconds and improved his time from last year’s competition by 44 seconds. The race was a career-best time and finish for Kling. He also led the Chanticleers to win as a team for the second-consecutive year with 21 points.

CHANTS HOST COASTAL CAROLINA INVITATIONAL: The Chanticleers will host their fifth annual Coastal Carolina Invitational. The meet is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 18 with a 6:10 p.m. start. Last year, the Chanticleers placed second in the invitational, with Kyle Kling finishing second and Jamie McCarthy finished third in the meet. Participating in the men’s 6k will be the CCU Alumni Team, Francis Marion, Limestone College, North Greenville, and S.C. State.

2008 HIGHLIGHTS: The CCU cross country team registered strong performances throughout the 2008 season, claiming one first place finish in the Gamecock Open with McCarthy and Kling finishing in first and second place. The team also finished fourth in the Big South Conference and 26th in the NCAA Southeast Regional.

CHANT HONORED BY BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE: Jamie McCarthy garnered honors as All-Big South, Big South Athlete of the Week, and the All-Big South Academic Team. CHANTS WELCOME THREE NEWCOMMERS: The Chanticleers welcome three newcommers to the 2009 squad: Josh Tormasi, Jared Williams, and Spencer Lange.

COASTAL SELECTED FOURTH IN PRESEASON POLL: Coastal Carolina was picked to finish fourth in the Big South Conference. Liberty was picked to repeat a fifth conference title, receiving all eight first-place votes. The preseason poll is voted on by the league’s coaches.

UP NEXT: The Chanticleers will travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to run in the Paul Short Run race hosted by Lehigh University on Friday, Oct. 2. Race time for the 8k is set for 11 a.m.
