CONWAY, S.C. - With a victory in the first race of the season at the Gamecock Invitational, the Coastal Carolina University men’s cross country team will be seeking its second win of the season and its fourth straight title at the Coastal Carolina Invitational Sept. 13. Race time is set for 8:30 a.m.
“This Saturday’s meet will provide a good level of competition for where we are at right now,” remarked Head Coach Jeff Jacobs. “We should be in the mix for the team and individual titles.”
The competition will include Charleston Southern, Concordia, UNC Wilmington and USC Beaufort. The Chanticleers have won the past three titles at the Coastal Carolina Inivitational, with their most recent showing placing four of the top five runners in 2007.
The Chanticleers have seven runners in the field, led by junior Jamie McCarthy (Riverstick Cork Co., Ireland/North Monastery) who won the Gamecock Invitational with a time of 15:41.46. McCarthy picked up the Big South Conference Choice Hotel Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week Sept. 4 for his performance in the first race of the year.
“We are still developing and getting experience as a team. This will be the first time racing the 8k college distance this year and the first time ever for a couple of the guys,” commented Jacobs.
Freshman Kyle Kling (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) placed second at the Gamecock Invitational crossing the line at 16:03.05, and will be running in his first 8k race as a Chanticleer at the Coastal Carolina Invitational. Redshirt freshman Rob Delviscio (Morton, Pa./Ridley) grabbed fifth spot at the Gamecock Invitational will also line up for the first time in the 8k.
