BOONE, N.C.- The Coastal Carolina Men's Cross Country team finished first out of nine teams at the Covered Bridge Open Friday, September 1 with a score of 26 points, after placing third last year. Coastal placed six runners, four in the top ten to beat out Florida State, Appalachian State and Big South opponent Winthrop. Freshman John Heron (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) led the way for the men finishing fourth with a time of 26:17 in the 8,000-meter-event.
"I am extremely happy with how the team ran and how they executed our race plan," Head Coach Jeff Jacobs said. "The most impressive thing was that we only finished 20 seconds apart from our first man to our sixth man. They did a great job running as a pack, which is ideally what you would like."
Sophomore Jamie McCarthy (Riverstock, Cork Co., Ireland/North Monastery) wasn't far behind Heron placing sixth with a time of 26:21. Freshman Max Hacker (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West) finished seventh at 26:28, senior Doug Currie (Sarnia, Ontario/Sarnia Northern) crossed the finish line ninth with a time of 26:33, junior Jake Morris (Aiken, S.C./Aiken) notched 11th place with 26:38 and junior Blair Paul (Queenston, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill) finished 20th clocking in at 27:07.
"The top three finishers for us were freshman, so that's extremely promising for the future of our program," Jacobs added.
The men are back in action Saturday, September 16 when they host the Coastal Invitational.
