The Coastal Carolina University athletic department has announced the hiring of Jeff Jacobs as the new head mens track and field/cross country coach, Coastal Director of Athletics Warren "Moose" Koegel announced today (Sept. 1). Jacobs replaces Andrew Allden, who left Coastal after three seasons as head coach.
Jacobs comes to Coastal from the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he was the assistant mens and womens track and field/cross country coach since the fall of 1999. During that time, he helped Gaucho distance runners to school records in the womens 1500 meters, 5000 meters, 3000-meter steeplechase, 10,000 meters and the distance medley relay, as well as the mens 800 meters and 10,000 meters. Jacobs also coached an all-American in mens cross country in 2001 and an all-American in womens track and field in 2003. The UCSB mens cross country team qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in 2001, finishing 17th, while the women finished 29th in 2003 in their first-ever trip to the NCAA finals. In addition to being an assistant coach at UCSB, Jacobs worked for a local financial planning organization for the past five years.
Jacobs also remains a competitive long-distance runner, setting the course record of 1:30.29 in the "Pier to Peak" Half Marathon, a 4000-foot elevation climb, in 2000. Jacobs also won the Santa Barbara Half Marathon in 2000 in a time of 1:12.12.
Jacobs earned a bachelors of arts degree in communication studies at California-Santa Barbara in 1992 and completed his coaching certification at UCSB in 1990. He has completed many United States Association of Track and Field certification classes, including an Level II endurace certification this past July.
"Im really excited to be at Coastal Carolina," Jacobs said. "I believe our cross country and track and field programs have tremendous potential. Coach Connie has done a great job with the womens program, and I hope to bring the same level of success on the mens side. Im excited about building a track and field program at Coastal. It will be exciting to get out at our first meet and just get going."
"Jeff Jacobs is a type of person we want at Coastal," Koegel said. "He is an outstanding coach and has a proven winning record at UCSB, coaching all-American runners and having conference champions in cross country and track and field. The cross country teams have also qualified for national championships. Jeff is a gifted runner in his own right and the experience of knowing what distance runners go through will help our athletes. We are excited to have Jeff as part of the Coastal family."
Jacobs starts his Coastal coaching career with the College of Charleston Invitational Friday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m., in Charleston, S.C.
