CONWAY, S.C.- The men's cross country team has been tabbed to finish fourth in the Big South as voted on by the league's head coaches in the preseason poll. Defending champion Liberty was picked first followed by High Point and VMI.

This year's Coastal Carolina squad returns the top runner from a year ago in the form of Kyle Kling. Kling went all season as the top runner for the Chants and was also the champion of last season's Gamecock Open with a time of 15:19.39.

"Kyle has been training hard this summer and will once again be the leader of this team," said head coach Jeff Jacobs. "He is fit and ready to compete."

The remainder of the team will be composed of a few familiar faces in Spencer Lange, Rob Delviscio, and John Heron. Lange competed in three events last fall including a 26th overall place at the Coastal Carolina Invitational. Delviscio and Heron were both inactive last season.

Several newcomers will appear for their first collegiate cross country season this fall including freshmen standouts Andre Enoch and Cameron Wells. Senior Christian Mendez, who has competed in the spring track seasons while at Coastal Carolina, will be looked at to provide leadership for the squad.

"I am looking forward to see how the newcomers are able to come in and compete this fall," said Jacobs. "Right now the two through five spots are open on the team; we are just looking for the guys to step up and claim them."

The Chants will open the season at the Gamecock Open, an event the team won last year, against some stout Division I competition including in-state foe Clemson University.

"We are still training hard," said Jacobs. "As a team, we are eager to compete in the Gamecock Open and gain experience against good competition."

Coastal will then return home on Friday, September 17 as they play host to the 6th Annual Coastal Carolina University Invitational. The CCU Invitational will feature Big South favorite Liberty, The Citadel, South Carolina State, and UNC-Wilmington.

The Chanticleers will then compete in the Big South Preview (Sept. 25) and Blue Ridge Mountain Open (Oct. 15) before the Big South Championship meet on October 30 in Radford Va.
