BOONE, N.C. -- The Coastal Carolina University men's cross country team opened the 2007 season with a sixth place finish at the Covered Bridge Open on Friday, Aug. 31. The Chanticleers totaled 139 points.
Sophomore Jamie McCarthy (Riverstick, Cork Co., Ireland/North Monastery) paced the Chants with a time of 26:05.42 and an 18th place finish. Senior Blair Paul (Queenston, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill) placed 25th with a time of 26:28.93, while sophomore Max Hacker's (Hazelwood, Mo./Hazelwood West) time of 26:32.03 was 29th. Sophomore John Heron (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) was 43rd (27:04.88) and senior Jake Morris (Aiken, S.C./Aiken) finished 46th (27:16.90). Freshman Kevin Davis (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro Horrsham) completed the course in a time of 28:09.59, which was 66th. Rounding out the Chants were freshman Travis Owens (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) in 78th, sophomore Ryan Caputo (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) in 79th and freshmen Mike Kimmel (Dilsburg, Pa./Northern) and David Mead (Columbia, S.C./Ridgeview) in 81st and 83rd, respectively.
Florida State won the race with a 25-point total. The Seminoles were followed by host Appalachian State with 68 points.
Coastal returns to action on Friday, Sept. 14 when it hosts the Coastal Carolina Invitational at Quail Creek Golf Club. Race time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
