Men's Cross Country Tops the Field at the Gamecock Invitational
FORT JACKSON, S.C. - The CoastalCarolinaUniversity men's cross country team won the Gamecock Invitational (5k) in Columbia, S.C., Friday, Aug. 29. The Chanticleers had six runners finish in the top 12 in a field of 34 competitors.
The Chanticleers nabbed first place with a team score of 22 points. Mercer earned 43 points, while Charleston Southern took third place with 84 points.
Junior Jamie McCarthy (Riverstick, Ireland/North Monastery) topped the field finishing in a time of 15:41.46 to claim the individual title, while freshman Kyle Kling (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) placed second with a time of 16:03.05
"I am happy with the results today," said Head Coach Jeff Jacobs minutes after the race. "The guys started off the season well with this win, and I was especially happy with Jamie's run. He ran a smart race, taking the lead in the last kilometer and then really opening up a gap on the field to finish strong. Kyle did a great job for his first collegiate race as well."
The Chants captured the fifth and sixth place with redshirt freshman Rob Delviscio (Morton, Pa./Ridley) running a in his first race, edging out sophomore Kevin Davis (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro Horrsham), who crossed the line with a time of 17:02.21.
David Mead (Columbia, S.C./Ridgeview) ran 17:12.30, finishing in eighth place just ahead of junior Ryan Caputo (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights), who ran 17:28.59.
The Chanticleers will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 13, when it hosts the Coastal Carolina Invitational at Quail Creek Golf Course in Conway, S.C.
