2009-10 Coastal Carolina Athletics Year in Review

CONWAY - The 2009-10 season was another banner year for the Coastal Carolina University Department of Athletics. The nearly 430 student-athletes experienced unprecedented success on the playing fields, in the classroom and in the community.
Below is a brief run-down of the Chanticleers 2009-10 season. (See attached for complete "Year in Review" with additional and more detailed information.)
Coastal Carolina placed second overall in the Big South Sasser Cup Standings, capturing the Men's Big South All-Sport Trophy and placing second on the women's side.
Five teams won a combined six Big South Team Championships: BASEBALL (regular-season and tournament), MEN'S GOLF (tournament), MEN'S SOCCER (regular season), MEN'S BASKETBALL (regular season) and VOLLEYBALL (tournament).
Four teams earned NCAA Championship berths: BASEBALL, MEN'S GOLF, WOMEN'S GOLF and VOLLEYBALL. MEN'S BASKETBALL added a National Invitational Tournament postseason berth. Individually, 11 Outdoor Track & Field student-athletes qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, including eight men and three women.
Six All-Americans: Two from FOOTBALL and four from BASEBALL. One Freshman All-American: BASEBALL.
Three Academic All-Americans: VOLLEYBALL, WOMEN'S BASKETBALL and BASEBALL. Eight Academic All-District III selections: Two from WOMEN'S BASKETBALL and BASEBALL and one each from VOLLEYBALL, MEN'S BASKETBALL, WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD and SOFTBALL. Four teams received academic recognition for excellence by their respective coaches association: MEN'S & WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY and MEN'S & WOMEN'S SOCCER. Three from WOMEN'S GOLF were named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team.
Women's track and field's Mikaela Terry won the Big South's Christenberry Award for Academic Excellence, while volleyball's Jill Nyhof and baseball's Austin Fleet were named Big South Female and Male Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
74 ALL-BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE selections and 52 BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK.
Six Big South Individual Sport Honors: MEN'S SOCCER Player of the Year, WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Defensive Player of the Year, BASEBALL Pitcher of the Year, WOMEN'S GOLF Player of the Year, WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD Most Outstanding Track Performer and WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD Most Outstanding Field Performer.
Two Big South Coaches of the Year: MEN'S BASKETBALL and BASEBALL.
Two Big South Freshmen of the Year: VOLLEYBALL and SOFTBALL. Five Big South All-Freshman honors: VOLLEYBALL, WOMEN'S SOCCER, MEN'S BASKETBALL and two from MEN'S SOCCER.
Three Big South Scholar-Athletes of the Year: VOLLEYBALL, WOMEN'S BASKETBALL and BASEBALL.
Big South MEN'S TENNIS SINGLES FLIGHT CHAMPIONS (2), WOMEN'S TENNIS SINGLES FLIGHT CHAMPIONS (2), BASEBALL Big South and NCAA Regional Tournament MVP and 17 Big South INDIVIDUAL MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONS.
The MEN'S GOLF squad won its seventh consecutive Big South title, setting a league record, and 12th in 14 years.
The BASEBALL team posted a school and Big South record 55 wins and went 25-0 in league play and was 4-0 in winning the Big South Conference Tournament, marking the first time a Big South baseball team had completed a full league season and tournament undefeated.
Baseball earned a #4 overall seed to the NCAA Baseball Championship, winning the Myrtle Beach Regional and hosting the Myrtle Beach Super Regional.
