COLUMBIA, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina men's cross country team finished a strong second in the Gamecock Open 5k hosted by the University of South Carolina. Coastal finished second in the meet with a total of 45 points.
Clemson University placed first of the Division I universities with 19 points followed by Coastal and South Carolina State with 69 points.
Clemson's Ty McCormack won the meet with a time of 15:08.13.
After winning the meet last fall as a sophomore, Kyle Kling was once again the top finisher for the Chanticleers as he crossed the finish line second of 44 collegians with a time 15:20.12.
"Kyle ran a very strong race," said head coach Jeff Jacobs. "He has worked very hard in training and picked right up where he left off last season."
Finishing second for the Chants and 12th overall was John Heron with a time of 16:28.72. Freshman Cameron Wells impresses in his collegiate debut, finishing 15th overall and third for the Chats with a time of 16:32.62. Rob Delviscio crossed the line in 22nd with a time of 16:56.75. Rounding out the Chants finishers was Andre Enoch and Spencer Lange with times of 17:57.97 and 18:27.18 respectively.
"It was nice to see Heron back in a cross country uniform and to finish strong after not running cross country for several years," said Jacobs. "Overall as a team, we still have plenty of work to do. This meet was just the start."
The Chants will return to action on Sept. 17 as they host the 6th Annual Coastal Carolina University Invitational. This will be the only home meet of the season for the Chanticleers.
