Baseball's Woodward, Anderson Named Louisville Slugger Third Team Preseason All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University baseball players David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) and Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) were named to the Preseason All-America Third Team by the Collegiate Baseball newspaper, the organization announced today.    Anderson, a senior infielder, hit .333 with 17 doubles and a Big South leading 20 home runs in 2008. He was named the Co-Most Valuable Player of the NCAA Conway Regional after going 7-of-18 with three home runs and eight RBI in three games. Anderson was named the Pro-Line Athletic National Hitter of the Week and the Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger Player of the Week May 12 after hitting five home runs in a two-game stretch May 10-11 against High Point. Anderson was named to the All-Big South Second Team as a first baseman as he hit .381 in conference play last season. He also was a two-time Big South Player of the Week in 2008. Anderson has a .328 average with 30 doubles, 29 home runs and 102 RBI heading into 2009. The senior also has 13 career wins and 12 saves on the mound in his three years as a Chant.   Woodward, a sophomore infielder/outfielder, hit .364 with 15 doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 45 RBI in 64 starts for the Chanticleers. The Big South Freshman of the Year and All-Big South first team selection had a .540 on-base percentage, which is a single-season school record. He also was hit by a pitch 30 times, which is a school and Big South record. He was named to the All-Conway Regional team, scoring 10 runs and hitting .600 in the three games. Woodward was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI in the championship game against East Carolina June 1. He drove in five runs in a win over UNC Asheville April 19 and had five hits in a win over Charleston Southern April 12. He led the Big South with 82 runs scored and 42 stolen bases and walked 58 times. Woodward was named to the All-Ping! Baseball Third Team and the Freshman All-Ping! Baseball First Team. He also was a First Team Freshman All-American by Baseball America and, a Second Team Freshman All-American by the NCBWA, a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and a Second Team All-Region selection by the American Baseball Coaches Association.   Both players were also named to the Wallace Award Watch List, while Anderson was a third team selection by the NCBWA.   Coastal Carolina will open its 2009 season on Friday, Feb. 20 at the Caravelle Resort Tournament in Conway, S.C. The Chanticleers return six starters and nine pitchers from last year’s 50-14 team that advanced to the Super Regionals for the first time in school history.   FIRST TEAM PRE-SEASON ALL-AMERICANS RHP Stephen Strasburg, San Diego St. (8-3, 1.57 ERA, 133 K, 16 BB in 97 1/3 IP).
