Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Announces Recruiting Class

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University men's track & field and cross country Head Coach Jeff Jacobs announced eight additions to the program for the 2007-08 season. The incoming class includes several state champions and the 2007 South Carolina Gatorade Athlete of the Year for high school boy's track & field. Both CCU track & field and cross country each finished second at their respective Big South Championship meet last year.

"I'm very excited about our track & field/cross country recruiting class," Jacobs said. "We really added to our depth and have some young men coming in who can make a big impact here at Coastal."

Both Mike Kimmel (Dilsburg, Pa./Northern) and Travis Owens (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) will join the cross country team as well as perform as mid-distance runners for track & field. Kimmel finished sixth in the 800 meter at the 2007 Pennsylvania State 3A Championships with a personal best mark of 1:54.39. He also holds a personal best of 4:25.11 in the 1600 meter. Owens claimed three state championships as a senior. He was a member of the South Carolina. State 4A championship cross country and basketball teams as well as a leg on the first place 4x800 meter relay team. Owens holds a 5k best of 16:05 along with personal bests of 1:58.44 in the 800 meter and 4:25 in the 1600 meter.

Chad Phillps (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood) was named the South Carolina Gatorade Athlete of the Year after claiming state titles in the high jump and triple jump along with a third place finish in the long jump in 2007. He owns personal bests of 6' 8" in the high jump, 48' 9" in the triple jump and 23' 6" in the long jump.

Ross Graves (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) was a finalist in three events at last year's high school state championships. He posted a third place finish in the high jump in 2007 and a runner-up finish the year before. Graves holds a personal best 6' 6" in the high jump.

Jacob Scheuer (Blackstone, Ill./Dwight Township) was a two-time state finalist in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles, registering fourth and seventh place finishes. He holds a personal best of 39.46 in the 300 meter IH. Scheure is the brother of 2005 CCU graduate Paul Scheuer, who holds the school record in the 400 meter IH.

Zach Barr (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) finished fifth in the javelin at the Pennsylvania State 3A Championships in 2007. He owns personal bests of 198' 7" in the javelin, 149' 8" in the discus and 52' 0.5" in the shot put.

Ryan Edlich (Viginia Beach, Va./Williamsport Area) competed in five events at the 2007 VISAA Track & Field Championships. He claimed the Virginia state championship in the 100 meter and the high jump. He holds personal bests of 6' 6" in the high jump and 22' 3.5" in the long jump.

Jerome St. Bernard (Markham, Ontario/Monmouth) joins CCU after transferring from Monmouth University in Long Beach, N.J.. He owns a personal best of 21.64 in the 200 meter.

The Chanticleers open the 2007 cross country season at the Covered Bridge Open in Boone, N.C., Aug. 31. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m.
