Men's Track and Field Inks Six in the Recruiting Class

CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina University men's cross country/track & field Head Coach Jeff Jacobs has announced six additions to the program for the 2008-09 season.

“I am very happy with the recruiting class," said Jacobs. "It is a little smaller than usual since we had only a few seniors this spring and a lot of solid returnees. We filled our biggest need at the throwing events, after losing an All-American javelin thrower and two Regional level hammer throwers."   The graduation of All-American Thomas Jordan and Regional Qualifiers Galen Jones and Jake Edelman left a gaping hole at the throws position. The new batch of throwers includes Chris Brown (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal), Bryan Fill (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights), a transfer from Monmouth, and Mark Manno (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest). Newcomer Jason Flanagan (Philadelphia Pa./ Father Judge) will compete in throws and the pole vault.   Jacobs also signed Ohio native, Kyle Kling (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville), the only distance runner and hurdle specialist Shane Norris (Lexington, S.C./Lexington).   Coastal Carolina opens the 2008 cross country season at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C., Aug. 29. Race time is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.     Chris Brown (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) 2008 SCHSL State A Champion in shot put and discus… 2007 State runner-up in discus throw… State Finalist as a sophomore and junior at the shot put… School record holder in the shot put (50’ 3.5”) and discus (150’ 4”)… Two-time Greenville All-County MVP for field events… Three year starter for the football team… Was the team captain and leading rusher in 2008.   Coach Jacobs on Brown: “Chris is a pure athlete and should be able to help us in the shot put, discus and eventually the hammer.”   Bryan Fill (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Monmouth University) At Monmouth University, Fill was a 2008 NCAA East Region Qualifier in the javelin… Personal best in the javelin is 67.88m (222’ 8”)…   Coach Jacobs on Fill: "Bryan is one of the top returning javelin throwers in the East Region, with potential to be a National Qualifier this season.”   Jason Flanagan (Philadelphia Pa./Father Judge HS) Two-time Nike Outdoor National Participant in the Javelin… 2008 PCL Champion in the javelin and discus… Competed in several field events at Father Judge including the javelin, discus, shot put and pole vault… Owns a personal best of 191’ 10 in the javelin, and 13’ in the pole vault.   Coach Jacobs on Flanagan: “Jason has been successful in a variety of events in high school including the javelin, discus, shot put and pole vault. He should make an immediate impact in the javelin as a freshman.”   Kyle Kling (Louisville Ohio/Louisville) Finished 11th in 2007 Ohio State High School Division I Cross Country Championship… Runner-up in 2007 District Cross Country Championship… 2008 Ohio State HS Championship Finalist in the 1600m… Holds personal bests of 4:22.76 (1600m), 9:44.60 (3200m), 15:43 (5k).   Coach Jacobs on Kling: “Kyle has had great success in cross country and track in the very competitive state of Ohio. He has good potential for the longer college distances and has a shot to be a top five runner for this fall’s cross country squad.”   Mark Manno (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest HS) A 2008 PA State HS Championship Finalist in the discus… 2007 and 2008 Lebanon-Lancaster League Champion in the discus… 2007 Lebanon-Lancaster League shot put Champion… Registered a personal best of 161’ 8” at the discus, 53’ 9” in the shot put.   Coach Jacobs on Manno: “At 6’ 4”, 250lbs, Mark has great size to make the transition to the collegiate shot put and discus implements, and good potential to vie for a spot at the hammer.”   Shane Norris (Lexington, SC/Lexington HS) Runner-up at the 2008 SCHSL State AAAA Championship in the 110m high hurdles… Placed sixth in the 400m intermediate hurdles at the 2008 SCHSL AAAA Championship… 2008 Region Champion in the 110mHH and a runner-up 400mIH… Owns a personal best of 14.78 in the 110mHH and 56.52 (400mIH).   Coach Jacobs on Norris: “Shane will add depth to one of our strongest events, the high hurdles. At 6’ 3”, he has good height to make the transition from the high school height to the 42” NCAA hurdles. He should also be able to make an impact in the 400mIH.”
