Men's Track's Simpson Fails to Qualify for Long Jump Finals at NCAA Championships
SACRAMENTO, CALIF. -- Redshirt sophomore Jerome Simpson (Reidsville, N.C./Reidsville) posted a jump of 20' 3.5" (6.18m) on his final leap of qualifying but it wasn't good enough to advance him to the finals at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 6. The four-day championship is being held in Sacramento, Calif.
In his first NCAA Track Championships, Simpson fouled on his first two leaps in the qualifying and then finally posted a mark on his final attempt to finish 26th, as he battled to find his mark in the breezy conditions. Barrett Saunders of Kansas was the top qualifier with a leap of 25' 8.75" (7.84m).
"I am very proud of Jerome and what he accomplished with very limited practice sessions," head coach Jeff Jacobs said. "Qualifying for the NCAA Championships in just three competitions shows how talented and how competitive he is."
