Baseball Trio Named to the All-Ping! Baseball Third Team

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University baseball players David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll), Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla./Santa Fe Catholic) and Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) all were named to the All-Ping! Baseball Third Team, the website announced today.   Anderson, a senior, hit .377 with 11 doubles, two triples, 21 home runs and 82 runs-batted-in for the Chanticleers. He was named the Big South Player of the Year as well as garnering All-Big South Tournament honors, becoming just the second player in conference history to earn that feat. He also was named a Louisville Slugger Third Team All-America by Collegiate Baseball. He hit his 49th career home run in the Big South Tournament championship game against Winthrop, passing Tom Romano to become the school’s career home run leader. He also hit his 50th home run in the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional win over Kansas, becoming the second player in Big South history to have 50 home runs in his career. Anderson had eight game-winning RBI and a .732 slugging percentage. He had two home runs apiece in games against High Point and Gardner-Webb and hit .420 in Big South games. He also made just six errors on the year at first base.    McCully, a junior, was 8-1 with a 2.10 earned-run average in 28 appearances for the Chanticleers in 2009. McCully collected eight saves and struck out 64 batters in 73 innings pitched. He also held opponents to a .197 batting average. He earned the win in the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional opener against Kansas, striking out four and allowing just four hits in 7.1 innings. He also did not allow an earned run in 10 innings of work in the Big South Tournament. He pitched 8.1 innings in a win over Liberty, earning Big South Pitcher of the Week honors following the start. McCully also was named to the All-Big South First Team as a relief pitcher.   Wheeler, a sophomore, was 10-1 with a 3.83 earned-run average in 15 starts this season for the Chanticleers. The Big South Pitcher of the Year has struck out a team and conference high 98 batters in 91.2 innings pitched this year. Wheeler pitched a complete-game no-hitter in a 4-0 win over Hawai’i March 26 and had seven-inning, one-hit performances in wins over Stony Brook and VMI. Wheeler was 7-0 in Big South games and has 63 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched in conference matchups. He was named the Big South Pitcher of the Week three times this season. The Chanticleer opponents hit just .222 off Wheeler.   Coastal Carolina ended the 2009 season after winning the Big South regular-season and tournament title. The Chants also had eight All-Big South honorees and four All-Big South Tournament selections.
