Baseball Opens Chapel Hill Regional with an 11-3 Win over Kansas

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The second-seeded Coastal Carolina University baseball team (47-14) opened the 2009 NCAA Chapel Hill Regional with an 11-3 win over Kansas (37-23) May 29 in Chapel Hill, N.C. Nick McCully threw seven strong innings for the Chanticleers, while the top three of the Coastal Carolina order reached base 10 times with six runs-batted-in.   Coastal Carolina jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Rico Noel led off the frame with a single to left center. He moved to second as Kansas starter T.J. Walz hit Adam Rice with a pitch. Both runners would trot home on David Anderson’s towering home run to the gap in right field. It was Anderson’s 21st home run of the season and 50th in his career. Coastal Carolina then loaded the bases as Daniel Bowman doubled and Walz walked Jose Iglesias and Taylor Motter, but the Kansas hurler struck out Steve Davis and got Scott Woodward to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the threat.   Coastal Carolina added a run in the second as Noel walked and moved to third on a Rice single. Noel would score as Anderson grounded into a double play, making it 4-0 Chanticleers. Kansas would get a run back in the third as David Narodowski hit his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to the gap in left field.   The Chanticleers would answer in the bottom of the third as a Steve Davis single and walks to Scott Woodward and Noel loaded the bases with two outs. That would end the day for Walz. Brett Bollman came in and gave up a two-run single to Rice, making it 6-1 Coastal Carolina.   Narodowski hit his second home run of the day in the top of the fifth, cutting the Coastal Carolina lead to 6-2. His home run went right down the line in left field. It also was Narodowski’s third hit of the day.    The top of the lineup again provided a spark for the Chanticleers in the fifth inning. Noel legged out an infield single and then went to second on a throwing error by Tony Thompson. Noel would score on a single to left by Rice, making it 7-2 Chants.   Coastal Carolina tacked on three runs in the sixth inning. Tyler Bortnick led off the inning with a single. He would come home on Bowman’s 12th home run of the season. The Chants then made it 10-2 as Iglesias hit a ground-rule double and scored on a Motter single.    Kansas scored a run in the eighth as Narodowski walked, moved to third on a double from Brian Heere and scored on a groundout by Buck Afenir. The Chanticleers ended the scoring in the eighth Bowman scored on a Davis double play.   McCully earned his eighth win of the season, striking out four and allowing four hits and three runs in seven innings. Austin Fleet and Kent Altman pitched the final 1.2 innings of the game, with Altman striking out a pair of Jayhawks. The loss went to Walz, who allowed five hits and six runs in 2.2 innings of work.   Eight of the nine Chanticleers had a hit in the win over the Jayhawks, led by Rice and Bowman, who had three hits apiece. Rice and Anderson had three RBI, while Noel reached base four times and had three runs scored.   For Kansas, Narodowksi was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI.
