Johnson & Johnson Qualify for NCAA Outdoor Track Championships
NEW YORK, NY. Coastal Carolina's track and field programs had seven athletes place in eight events in the NCAA East Regional at Ichan Stadium on Randall's Island on Saturday, May 28 as hosted by Manhattan College.
For the men, Mark Johnson (North Myrtle Beach, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) placed fifth and qualified for nationals in the pole vault 5.21m/17'1". Senior Terah Kipchiris (Kitale, Kenya/Saboti Secondary) finished sixth in the 3,000m steeplechase with an 8:48.42, which was the best time in the Big South Conference this season. He has an opportunity to make Nationals, based on his ranking among the sixth, seventh and eighth place finishers in the three regionals.
Sophomore Galen Jones (Evans, Ga/Lakeside) finished 16th in the men's hammer, 53.83m/176'7".
For the women, sophomore Chasity Johnson (N. Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester) qualified for the NCAA Championships by finishing third in the triple jump with a leap of 13.33m/43'9". Junior Brittany Reid (McKinney, Texas/Rowlett (Coffeyville JC) placed sixth in the women'sdiscus with a 47.62m/156'11". She too has opportunity to compete at Nationals depending on her ranking among the regionals.
Teammate Tamara Bryant (Pasadena, Calif./La Salle (Moorpark CC) finished 14th in the same event with a 45.64m/149'9". Sophomore Dana Sizemore (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) was 19th in the women's javelin, 42.73m/140'2".
Coastal Carolina's track and field program will send at least two to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Sacramento State, June 8-11.
