Men's Track and Field Sends Two To NCAA Championships
GREENSBORO, NC -- The Coastal Carolina men's track and field squad has had two athletes qualify for the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after placing in the top five at the NCAA East Regional, May 26-27 in Greensboro, N.C.
Senior Mark Johnson (North Myrtle Beach, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) placed third in the pole vault with a final clearance of 5.31m (17' 5"). The four-time Big South champion had not practiced all week due to an ankle injury and missed his first two jumps at 4.91m, but then cleared it on his final jump and then cleared the next three heights en route to qualifying for his third straight NCAA Championships. Last year, Johnson was CCU's first-ever track All-American after placing eighth at the national championships.
Redshirt sophomore Thomas Jordan (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) placed fifth at the East Regional with a throw of 69.72m (228' 9"), just a little over a meter shy of his Big South record throw. Jordan hit the mark with his second throw of the day and also passed the 69-meter mark on his last throw with a toss of 69.40.
Junior hammer thrower Galen Jones (Evans, Ga./Lakeside) placed 16th in the hammer throw with a toss of 56.29m (184' 8"), while junior Tommy Sugishita (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande (Moorpark JC)) was 17th in the discus with a throw of 43.38m (142' 4").Freshman Tyrone Murphy (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) finished 26th in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 53.82. Johnson and Jordan will now compete at the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif., June 7-10 on the campus of California State University, Sacramento. Johnson will have qualifying in the pole vault on Wed., June 7, starting at 4:45 p.m., with the finals on Fri., June 9 at 4:30 p.m. Jordan's javelin competition kicks off with qualifying on Thu., June 8 at 1:15 p.m. with the finals on Sat., June 10 at 10 a.m.
