Men's Track's Simpson Qualifies for NCAA Championships in Long Jump

GAINESVILLE, FLA. -- Coastal Carolina junior Jerome Simpson (Reidsville, N.C./Reidsville) finished third in the long jump at the NCAA Regionals in Gainesville, Fla., May 25, and earned a spot in the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The NCAA Championships will be held June 6-9 in Sacramento, Calif., at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex on the campus of Cal-State Sacramento.

After fouling in his opening leap of the competition, Simpson posted his best leap of the day, going 7.50m (24' 7.25") to take third place, just .02m (1") behind champion Sam Tilly of Campbell and .01m (0.5") behind North Carolina State's Dexter Adams in second. The top five individuals in the event qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Among CCU's other regional qualifiers, Sophomore Tyrone Murphy was 25th in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 53.30.
